Engine ran smooth the entire way without a hiccup! Flogged it going over grants pass and the grapevine because there’s a ton of moisture in the oil, and it finally started to evaporate off after the grapevine. Gonna change the oil while I’m here, and maybe a few other things.

Goal of the trip is doing a bit of mechanical work on a family members car and on my buddy’s vanagon (pics when I see him!) then head south of time allows for a visit with Robbie, Brian, and Aeromech. Planning to hit Mexico for some fish tacos, and roll right back up north again!

More pics to come I’m sure Wink

Stuart, way back in the day (the 70’s) I used to pick up hitch hikers that looked like they really needed a ride. Had one guy in Colorado that was trying to get to Oregon for
work. Fed him on a whole package of hot
dogs and a can of baked beans. He washed the dishes in the stream. So
happy. Picked up a guy in Missouri and took him
home
in PA.
Now
a
days
I am
much more
careful
and that is sad...

I usually just leave the guessing up to God and make it work when I can. Not stressing it. Wink

Did a basic engine once over just now. Found a couple minor loose things from the last time I eyeballed it (a few months ago) and snugged those up. Good to go and runs fine! I swear that #2 exhaust valve should have gone by now but I guess not! It wasn’t supposed to make it more then a single tank of fuel. It’s gotten over 7 now. Got my money out of it so far I guess Very Happy

Debating a 2.3 stroker motor now that I’ve driven Notchboys 77. Easy to do and not any more expensive then stock and the trade offs seem plenty worth it to me!

Might not Look like much, but this picture represents my swapped in CB radio that my bus donated, and a domelight and two door position switches that weren’t working properly. Now they work. Yay!

Ahh man Ive hitchhiked from Atlanta to Pa and All over the west. Was a longtime patron of the hitchhiking arts. Wife has completely put an end to picking up anyone especially trimmers and tramps. That has coincidentally put an end to daring escapes, road parties, happenstance meetings with other travelers and free spirits and some fairly mind-numbing conversation.
My kids still think the van is a magnet for the lunatic fringe.

I love it that you pulled that van from someones yard and now have faith enough to drive it south into the peoples republic. You dont mess around when it comes to spare parts I see.

I cant help but comment that that brother looks lit.

You don’t tell them about the JB Weld in my engine, and I won’t tell them about the time you drove a thousand miles without an air filter, deal?

I've picked up many a group or solo females hitchhiking and usually give them the official Dad lecture on hitchhiking. They Rarely get offended.

First morning in warm and sunny LA California...
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Did a timing belt on a Honda v6 for 2 hours, finished up, changed the oil in Corkey, then Met up with Micah for some mid trip van Maintinence!
Micah has been on the road since November from Portland, and will be around 6-7 month on the road when the trip wraps up this April or so.

But of course first we had to break in the van proper by hanging out with 4 people in the van. A goal of Micah’s since he bought the van. Just upgraded front seats to caravan seats, and fixed swivels for easy hanging out n such.

His van is a 84 Westy with a 95 2.2l legacy Subaru engine in it. Gonna do a timing belt and tune up on it, then camp once (hopefully with Robbie and Brian) then roll south to the East side of Baja and put my feet in the water. Where we will do more work like properly installing his new tent Laughing

More pics to come I’m sure!
