My Buddy Stu. For those that don't know Stuart. Know this. That dude has a big heart and is one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He's the type of guy that has a hurting non running bus that still carries a can of gas on top of his Passat. Not for him but for others stranded on the side of the road.

Recently I had an issue with the dreaded "No idle". After driving fine for half the day. The bus just doesn't want to idle. WTF. Seems to be a lot of that going around on the Samba. Anyways a buddy of mine spent a few hours tweaking the Weber Progressive carb, chasing a potential vacuum leak, Dwell, points, and etc with no luck.

Stuart happened to be coming into PDX for some personal business and wanted to take a look. It was around midnight when he showed up and he went right into to mechanic mode. He fiddles and checks some of the possible scenarios and decides he wants wants to pull the carb. Now I'm thinking oh boy it's 1AM we don't need to be doing this. This is way more then I want to tackle at the moment. Plus Stuart is a Fuel Injection guy and works on modern cars. What the hell does he know about a Weber. Screw it! I will take it to a ACVW shop down the street in the morning. Stu was having none of this and proceeds to rip the carb out. In the early morning of darkness with only couple of flash lights in my driveway he takes the thing apart and cleans all the bits inside and out. This was very educational for me as a lot of the adjustment screws are hidden towards the front and a pain to get to in a 72 bus with no hatch.

So after he cleans it up puts it on. It's time to fire it up. Success! A nice strong idle. We drive it around and Stu makes careful adjustments intermittently along the side of the road to get the idle and mixture just right. Rusty is running tip top so back to the house. It's about 3am.

When we get home he wants to diagnose why my Bn4 heater won't fire up. So back at it he goes. I had to tear him away and kick hiss ass to bed. In the morning Xatie and I take off to run some errands around town. What did Stuart do. He worked on the heater and got it to fire up and cycle through the heat timer. That's going to be nice this winter Very Happy

Bus people are a special breed. I have the bus for a few years now. All the bus issues, new skills learned, friends made, camp outs, beer, The folks on The Samba, and expense has been priceless.

THANKS STUART! You're a good man and a good friend!

I remember Stu first posts and I think he took a lot of crap for a while but he always came out shining in the end.
We need more Stus. Very Happy

I love stories like this. Good job Stu!

VW people (like lots of folks) are awesome. It's what brings me back to this site on a daily basis. People sharing their experience in working on these cars have helped me learn so much over the years. I'm glad to help/share what I know with other newbies to the VW world.

We all can get caught up with the a-holes of the world causing us to be cynical. Posts like this are a good reminder that the VAST MAJORITY of people are good at heart.

I was a kid in the early 80's when a buddy and me where driving from San Diego to Phoenix. My bug burned up a front wheel bearing in the middle of the desert due to MY poor adjustment. 30 years later, I still look back and smile as I remember all the nice people who pulled over that dark night in the middle of no where to offer us any help they could. One nice man stood by for a hour with his flash light (that I failed to bring) so I could bandaid the repair and get to the next town.

I completely agree. He's racked up enough karma to last 1,000 lifetimes. I hope to be able to repay him for his kindness one day.

^^^ didnt get to meet this guy on our last PNW trip but heard alot about him from Xevin. I immediately developed a slightly non-sexual crush after hearing Xevin's description....

But let's be super clear here - Xevin is the ridiculous, real deal!
You guys all shoulda seen how he treated a complete stranger who wanted to see the area he lived in. phenomenal.
The Mrs. Said he was more welcoming and friendly than anyone in her family has been ever to her in her life. This guy dragged us around to countless bars and showed us REAL beer, shoved more excellent food in our faces than i could have dreamed of, put us up in his home for two nights (even though we could have been serial killers), and treated us like we have been best friends forever. After this trip, he is my new man crush.

Hope to return the favor when you are down. And we will be back up that way again someday, for sure!

YOU DA' MAN!

(Does it feel like it is starting to get a little too touchy feely here?)

We could just turn this into the good vibes thread...talk about fellow samba members and encourage and uplift someone and recognize them publicly. No need to not recognize them. Wink

Man crush is a great way to describe xevin....I feel like he is a brother to me like I've never had. Smile

Finally met Stuart this morning. He drove out here from Portland early this morning to help a fellow...Camaro driver!? Shocked
Nice work stu and glad to meet you briefly. I'm sure we'll hook up again.
I hope that Camero gets back on the road. Maybe you'll have him converted to VW's over the weekend. Wink
