It's that time of the year again. I thought my conspirator Mike Miller would have posted this on Samba but nothing current came up on my search besides the mod page. So here it is!

bURNINGvAN

where: Ocean Beach
San Francisco, California
(parking lot on the Great Highway - Highway 1
across the street from the Beach Chalet restaurant)

time: 12pm - ???

That's about two blocks from home, so I have no excuse not to go!

I hope to have samples of SA stainless steel auxiliary tanks and rear ladders with bike carrier and gerry canholders on-hand. Just in case people are curious what they look like in person.

We are distributing the batch which just came in. It will be another couple of months before we recover to start another group buy.

Sounds like fun, but why on a Sunday???

School night means those with kiddos have to bug out early and no nearby camping as an option.

Still, we've been looking for a nearby VW event so we'll probably make it out there.

Sunday because my co-conspirator Mike Miller runs a running camp every Saturday. Camping is technically not an option on Ocean Beach. BV has never been a camping event. Rather it's an alternative event for people who couldn't go to the camping events.

Ben what would you say the differences are in rack design between the SA and Gary Lee? Look pretty similar...

No disrespect intended. I certainly know how difficult it is to schedule something. You pretty much have to schedule it for when the schedulers are available and let the cards fall where they may.

I'm almost certain we'll be there unless the weather looks to be nasty that day!

Glenn, that topic is for the 2014 event and, technically, should've been locked due to the duplicate (and more popular) posted here in the Van forum: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=581228 .

Since this is the first, only, and official 2015 Burningvan event thread, I've unlocked it. Everett can be the final judge. Very Happy

As Kamz pointed out, this is the only bURNINGvAN 2015 posting. I checked before posting.

Anyway, madspaniard, I'm aready a 'retired catholic'. Sunday is just funday. A vanday like any other day. It's that pagan Mike Miller who pushed the Sunday schedule. Perfect day to worship at the Church of Perpetual Vandulgence (*TM)

The SA rack is intentionally narrower. Doesn't require drilling. PM me for more pics. Lower attachment is very different. Available in stainless also. Price is lower even with shipping to SFO. Forward shipping from here is extra. Ladder is less expensive. Extensions for bike racks are about 1/2 the price but that may change. The can carrier is super heavy duty but costs more. I will say the design may be inspired by Gary's ladders but these have been around awhile. The only difference is I asked for a redesign of the lower mount to make it more attractive. I also asked for 3 pairs of bolts on the bike rack extensions instead of the original 2 pairs. This was not a commercial venture but a group purchase. It was a trial and done only via my Facebook account. Eventually, a new group will be started here and on the Vanagon List.

This was not an easy task, as anyone who has ever done a group buy will tell. Throw in the importation aspect into their and it became a nightmare. Since I was essentially doing this for free, things had to be done when I wasn't working my real job. I may need to make a few bucks next time we the Mrs. will surely kill me.

No problem... my bad.

I pointed the 2014 topic to this one.

Hope you all burn more than one van Wink (joking)

It's was "alleged" in previous years that someone burned a magnesium engine case which lit up the beach. I'm two occasions a cardboard effigy of a van was sacrificed to the Vanagon gods. Lately, people have been too busy yacking about vans to remember that we're supposed to be burning something on the beach. The past two years coincided with spare the air day. That put a damper on the enthusiasm of the arsonists in the group.

Count me in for Burning Van. Looking forward to it!

I was there the year the half-engine block was combusted (allegedly I mean). I think it would have been visible from space (allegedly). As I recall it was the pre-1972 engine blocks that had sufficient Mg to burn. Apparently the UV light is so intense it can damage the retina.
