I searched and couldn't find the answer. I was told there is a difference in early and late cranks and was shown where the difference is. I understand where it is, but which one goes to which? I looked in the Wilson rebuild book and even though he mentions Mexico and Brazil AS-41 cases, no mention of differences in cross-drilled crankshafts. Ignore the smoked journals on either crank, they are off my parts shelf and are for identification only. Ofcourse they would be turned again before being used. One crankshaft has a machined surface whereas one has a rough cast surface with a ridge in the middle. Both crankshafts are 69mm cross-drilled. One case has an offset to the bearing area, whereas one is straight. Both are dual-relief 1600 cases, one is AE one is AK. Which crank goes into which case?!

Can't really help you with the question, but I have had to clearance cases to use replacement stock VW, stock stroke cranks over the years.
From what I heard from others, many have had to do the same thing. _________________ Joseph

The center web of the AK case is not "offsett", it is the same then tapers wider!
I was not aware of the crank difference but probably 2 and 1 go together |

That makes more sense now...late crank (crankshaft 2) is machined to clearance the strengthened center bearing boss (engine case 1).
So, late crank can go in early or late case....early crank early case only. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

the older crank will probably fit in the AK case........"probably"
Tell ya what tho, try to fit a DMS crank in there and the center web will have much clearanceing required, guaranteed!! |

I was told that the early crank won't work with the late case because you won't be able to set your end-play right. The casting hits the case, so when you set the end-play your setting the casting to case clearance and not bearing clearance.
I would like to know if there is any more information out there and why this isn't mentioned in the Wilson rebuild book.
I've put DMS c/w 69mm cranks in three motors with no clearancing needed. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.
