Amazingly preserved, original owner 1973 Westfalia Camper.
This VW Westfalia Campmobile was built in June of 1973, shipped to Atlanta where my wife and I purchased it new in November, 1973 at Crain Daly Volkswagen. It has been meticulously maintained and cared for it since. It simply is probably one of the best preserved, surviving examples of an original 1973 Westfalia Campmobile to be found.
It is a virtual time capsule as a rust-free and accident free original with 93,000 miles and documented maintenance records from new. It has an all original interior featuring the 1973 only mustard yellow cloth fabric, which is stain free, the original linoleum flooring, original cloth plaid curtains and interior wood paneling. The driver’s and passenger’s seat sides and backs are the original dark beige vinyl while the seating surfaces have been recovered in the correct off white basket weave fabric from TMI with the original type “horsehair” padding from Wolfsburg West for the original feel and appearance of the upholstered seat . All the glass is original with the exception of the windshield. The vehicle exterior has just been repainted with top-of-line PPG single stage DCC acrylic urethane paint in the original L90 D, pastel white. The interior paint is almost completely original. All glass was removed for the re-paint and all new German rubber seals used in the re-assembly. The fiberglass pop-top was repainted in acrylic urethane that was custom color matched to the original gel coat color which is a shade different in color to the original L90 D, as it was originally. New pop-top canvas was installed in the correct yellow color complete with the fringe on top. All five wheels (which are date stamped 6/73) were sandblasted, epoxy primed and then painted in the correct Argent Silver color. Five new Hankook R08, 8 ply 185 R 14 tires were then mounted.
Talk about a time capsule – the camper has a working AM/FM stereo radio with integral 8 track player along with a collection of 8 track tapes from the Beachboys, Jim Croche, James Taylor, Paul Simon, The Allman Brothers Band and the sound track from the Broadway musical “Hair”. It also has factory air conditioning that was installed in 1982 by the VW dealer. The vehicle was driven very little after the mid 80’s and then stored in my garage since 1993 until recently.
The drive- away side tent is like new as it has never been used and has only been set up one time to photograph. We even found the German inspectors tag rolled up in the tent as we were setting it up. This was the first time this tent had seen the light of day in 42 years! The overhead and child front seat cots are stain free and are like new. The vehicle comes complete with original window sticker, bill of sale, the original Owner’ Manual, Campmobile manual, VW distributors and dealers in North and Central America, Owner’s maintenance and Repair Guide and the Official Service Manual from Volkswagen of America (commonly known as the Bentley Manual) . It is currently titled in Georgia.
The vehicle has been meticulously maintained both mechanically and cosmetically with amazing attention to original detail. Recent work includes a tune-up consisting of new points, plugs oil change, oil filter, front axle lube and air filter. Other recent work includes a new steering drag link, new fuel pump and fuel lines, viton push rod tube seals, new master cylinder, brake fluid, new flexible rubber brake hoses all around, rear brake shoes, front disc pads, new alternator belt, and a new muffler and tail pipe. This vehicle drives, steers, stops and looks as good as it did in 1973.

1976 Westy Deluxe intro and questions
AB westy nut wrote: |
Ok I've posted a few times here and in the classified without properly introducing myself. So here goes...
I just picked up a very original, very complete (minus the odd little thing) 1976 Westy deluxe in Sage Green from the original owner. The bus was picked up by them in Germany (hence the 'UT' on the M-Plate) and has been back and forth to Europe at least four times over it's 34 year history. Here's the M-Plate:
62 135 668
568
945134 D53 P27 073 227
19 2 7373 UT 2319 61
The good things about the bus: rust-free except for a little bubble under the windshield seal and under the passenger side step rubber. Very complete and original interior (even has the original Sapphire XIV). Original motor that has never been rebuilt (184k miles and still has excellent compression numbers). The bad things: cosmetically, not in the best shape. The paint is faded and there are a few good dents and scrapes. Wheels need refinishing. Pop top needs a lot of work and a new canvas. Missing the front table that stows behind the driver's seat.

Oh dear you just know I had to say something about my grandpa's bus which he bought new in 1970! However it's a Riviera (don't know if you're interested in that as it's been converted obviously)!
I'll have to take a pic of all the paperwork tomorrow and get back to you. I have the original receipts, manual, brochures, some ads my grandpa saved, some sort of instructions (blue) that slip over the sun visor, some of the mechanics' receipts over the years, and the original White Stage Riviera side tent (blue/yellow) and its two-sided insructions. Wish I still had his original license plates. Some of this can be found in my gallery pics for now.
Will get back to you later (if you're counting Rivis)!
Here is Marya's 70 Riviera thread.
Question about practicality of my '70 Riviera

Marya -
I looked in your gallery of the bus. Looks like it was well used. How awesome is it to have a bus that a family member used and enjoyed.
What are the plans for it? Restoration? I would love to see a scan of the tent instructions some day! |
Thanks Jason!
Ok here are pics of the paperwork, tent instructions and some more pics of bus - however I still need to properly scan side tent directions for you. I'll try to do that soon (i think I need hubby's help with scanning. I'm a weenie). I've since taken out all the furniture - temporarily - and also the floor is out as is the rubber floor up front. That'll all go back in later.
Here's side tent up in the '70s. That's my grandma and two brothers there.
Original paperwork:
Close up of original bus purchase receipts from Sunset Volkswagen in
Beaverton Oregon - probably either near or connected to ASI/Riviera:
Some silly notes of my grandpa's (!):
Close up of notes:
Close up of front side of side tent (Riviera) instructions:
Close up of back side of side tent instructions:
When the bus was brand new, this was found slipped onto the visor I think:
More pics of bus in next post...
Bus (again, '70 Riviera) in 1973:
Bus has just been emptied out temporarily but this shows the original interior paint and curtains today:
I also just removed the black rubber flooring but this shows the cabin (?) area. Nothing special here but still, it's all original:
Looking toward rear of bus in original pop top - which obviously has original mattress (embarrassed about my son's dirty socks but he'd been running around in them outside! Also the pop top's filthy but you can see from the small circular "clean" mark at the back that a wet wipe cleans it up well! Will just have to weatherize after I clean the whole thing):
With windows zipped closed:
Looking toward front of bus from inside pop top - note that the front window doesn't have nor has ever had a screen. Not sure why except that you can climb out onto the luggage rack without a screen:
The original floor and icebox:
Original white pop top edge trim, hanging off the pop top! Wish I could find replacement that's white. Looking into it now and have a couple of possible leads. Samples are on their way:
Another one showing curtains, and here's a sconce in the cargo area. I don't remember it ever not being there but another Samba member said his or her Riviera didn't come with such a light - so maybe my grandpa installed it (?):
And finally here's a lovely (not) picture showing the view if looking in from the rear of the bus, with furniture in. Since those tears on the top of the rear seat are the only tears on any of the furniture and it's otherwise in good condition, I'm hoping to find a vinyl repair shop who will fix that up:

99.5% original Westy, I found this at an estate sale and what a find it is, this bus was sold in Coco Beach Florida in Dec of 77 and was kept and love by the original owner his whole life (till he passed away). Everything about this bus is in mint shape except for some small flaws in the exterior paint. Everything on this bus works . Bus has 49,000 original miles. All of the Seats and cushions are original and in perfect shape (the front seats pads are a little flat but no tears). I even got the original window sticker, canceled check (from the Attorney who bought the bus),owners manuals (both) and the original warranty card and booklet in the og owners name. All of the og carpet is in near mint shape with no holes or tears, even the seats have all the og rubber around the metal mounting bases that are still intact and perfect. All of the cabinets have flawless un-chipped wood formica. I have all service records from this van and it has been in storage since 1988 with the previous owners other volkswagens in his collection. the door panels are in excellent shape and the dash is the cleanest I have seen with all the paint still on every knob and even the paint on the turn signal bar and the wiper bar. |

Once in a while you find van that has been well cared for its entire life, this is one of them... Amazing survivor. 1975 Transporter. 100% Original Paint, Original Interior. Updated hydraulic valve motor. Rare automatic. Near mint head liner. This bus has no rust. Floors are perfect. This van had been garaged or covered most of its life. The interior is in excellent condition. |

Good question. My thought is, it is more important for the vehicle to be original. So members restoring a Bus will have a pictorial resource to go to.
Just my thought

Think this qualifies...
The 1975 Bus my Uncle bought in 1976. 70K original miles. Garaged its whole life. The nose paint was repainted, but the rest of the paint was original. Painful to sell, but I wouldn't have my White Whale 70 Single Cab if I hadn't. This Bus went to a good home in FL…
Middle seat spent it's life in the dry basement
Nice tear free headliner. Bit dirty where my 6'7" Uncle's head hit above the driver's seat…very "cleanable".

Grady is the third owner of this beautiful Westy. Garaged all its life. He bought this beauty with only 81k miles on the odometer. After five years of ownership it has 92k on the clock now. No garage queen here, Grady takes it out as much as he can. Camper interior superb, original birch plywood, plastic laminate, upholstery and curtains. Up front we have the original child's cot put in for display. Pop top canvas and seals all oe (original equipment), note the wasp nest is left in place as a conversation piece. The side tent also came with the vehicle and is in like new condition. It has had a few touch ups to bring it back to like new condition. At some point previously the rear suffered a collision and was repaired and painted to match and the bumpers have been refinished.
You will see under the dash on the passengers side, there is mounting holes for a C.B. radio. Also note on the front bumper the holes for a C.B. antenna. Grady pointed out that the holes appeared to be punched out. He is wondering if the C.B. radio could have been a factory installed option?

David from the San Fernando Valley, brought his 71 Westy up north. For the 2015 Kelly Park Spring Meet. David did not have to go far to find this vehicle. He purchased it from one of his Neighbors, who happened to be the original owner. During, seven years of ownership. David has respectively restored this Westy. Adding his own design touches, where he seen fit. But keeping with the true Westy theme. This bus has been gone threw from top to bottom. Numbers matching engine and transaxle, all cabinets are OE (original equipment), plywood was restored to its original glory. Seat covers and curtains replaced with blue in the fabric to compliment the beautiful respray in the factory colors. The camper tags still in their pristine condition.
