I will most likely go to litchfield and transporterfest.

Today I'm really working hard to adjust the brakes so that they're perfect. Still kinda out of whack. Also having some hard start issues. Most likely the crappy battery I have and I need to replace the trans ground strap.

Nothing really to update besides my inspection station adventure. I have been bringing the bus to the same place for 4 years and I always get a sticker. I was waiting outside and the owner tells me the bus is going to fail inspection. The bumper was hanging too low, all the lights, and horn must work, and the rust has to be fixed. Little do they know how much work I put into fixing the frame and front end, but all electrical components work and if I pull the bumper up any higher I wont be able to open the engine compartment. Rolling Eyes The rust on the outside has never been a problem and the bus hasn't changed cosmetically ever. So I don't know why this dude had a hair across his ass all of the sudden. So I went down the street and needless to say it passed inspection and there were many stories told about old buses. If only the inspection station knew how much work I did to make it safer then it was the previous year. It's frustrating sometimes.

Post inspection cool down and celebratory beer.

So this spring I replaced the main seal and clutch. I have driven the bus about 1,000 miles since this last service. When I got back from the Litchfield show in CT i noticed that the clutch had a shutter in first gear. There is no clutch slip when I take off in third or second gear but the pedal also seems kind of off. I adjusted the clutch a little and that seemed to help. Could the main seal be leaking again and covered the disk with oil already? It was a cheap EMPI clutch and something about the spring action on the pedal doesn't feel right. Any thoughts?
I know I should have taken pictures of the clutch before but I didn't. Rolling Eyes

It has always been in the bus Tom. It just has a rank white stained, greasy, moldy cover on it. I want some of the other cabinets for this setup to top it off.

Today I picked up some VW transmission mounts from Johns Car Corner in VT.

Which ones would be best for the bus. I have heard mixed reviews on the VW ones and they look different than the Wolfsburg mounts. I'm trying to solve this clutch shuttering issue and this is one fix that I know I need to make. I also got in my new flywheel and clutch today.

The 211 would be my first choice if the rest of it looked sound. Just my opinion.

I have another question about flywheels. Did all flywheels on AE coded engines (mine is a 1600sp 10yr serrano motor with 30,000ish miles) have the flywheel with the oring? When I replaced the main seal in April it didn't have the oring on the flywheel. So I've ordered a new flywheel from CIP1 and it has the oring lip for the seal. I'm trying to solve this clutch shuttering issue by replacing all parts that I can think of. Can I put this new flywheel on with the oring or will it not work?

Yes AE cases came with o ring FWs. But the engine was new a long time ago and probably isn't bone stock. Wink
Anyhow, the FW should match the crank.
If your crank shaft is stepped, use a stepped FW
If your crank is not stepped, use an O-ring FW

If you don't keep it matched, it can ooze oil, which does get on the clutch.

You can mix it up one way with using goop, but I don't remember which, I wrote it on my garage wall so I remember.

Generally FWs are stepped/6V/small clutch or oring/12V/ large clutch, but there are many varieties so you do have to check.

The 1500 66 buses came with 6V o ring large clutch FWs.
These are a bit hard to find sometimes. They are nice for 6V 1600 buses.

Here's a 12V 180mm/small clutch FW. It is O-ring. Why a small clutch 12V? They went to large clutch for a 1500 IIRC. odd.

Is the tube for the clutch cable firmly adhered to the rear torsion?
I have had that break loose and flex around, which made the clutch act oddly. I used a couple large hose clamps, like the big end of the axle boot, and clamped it firmly in place. I was told it should be welded.

my bus is 12v and the old FW does not have the oring. From what you're saying, I cannot use the flywheel with the oring? Guess it's time to get back to it and repalce the mounts and check out the clutch and flywheel.

Well, is your crank stepped or not?
Do you have a pic of the end of the crank where the FW goes on?
My wall say you can put a stepped FW on your later crank.
meaning if you have a stepped crank you need a stepped FW.
