What's your setup? Off-road? Stock? Lowered? |

I have been very happy with Bilstein shocks, which I have installed on many air cooled VW's, including my '74 Thing.
They're a little more expensive than average, but I think they're worth it.
B46-620 Front
B46-034 Rear
Whatever shocks you choose, don't forget the 131498441 shock mount kit for the front.
Good luck, Mondshine |

I'm stockfish myself. No need for apologies. I only asked because how the car is used is an important factor in the decision.
I'm very happy with the KYB standard duty shocks. Available through The Thing Shop or German Motor Works. |

I run the KYB standard shocks in the rear, and the gray (Gr2?) ones in front. Stockish sitting with mud tires and I do some mild to mid off roading fairly often...I live in the sticks. This combination is affordable and also handles very well on the pavement. _________________ "I haven't seen one of those since I was shootin' at 'em!" |

I agree
I have always use the kyb and have been happy. I think they are a great upgrade and value.
That said when I changed my fronts to bilstein and then my rears . They give a definitely clearly noticeable better ride. Much less harsh then the kybs.
Worth 3x the cost? Yes |

Any recommendation for Bilsteins for a 74 with a small lift. Changes the rears from worn out KYB's to Bilsteins and it made a big difference. The fronts that my mechanic ordered were to short to fit my lifted thing. Any recommendations on what Bilstein model to get? I dont know how much its lifted....its not too high.

Did your mechanic include the spacer/bushing/dust cap install kit?
They add an inch or so to the overall length. |

Probably not. Ive been going to him for quite a while. this time around he wants me to being the new parts (front shocks) in with me. I will have to ask. Im not sure how short the ones he ordered in the past were...ill have to ask. I should just do the job myself but his repairs historically have been pretty inexpensive. I may take this job to someone else. Thank you for the tip on the spacer kit. |
