I have a 1967 bug with a stock 1600 engine. I added foil-backed insulation all atop the luggage compartment and under the rear seat. But it's still too noisy. I still have plenty of insulation I could glue under the luggage compartment. Will engine fumes or oils dissolve the glue?

Any suggestions?

TIA,

crvc

Don't think it would do any good to add to the outside. Might try some padding on the inside. The carpet kit I just installed came with some 1/2 inch padding that I added on top the Dynamat in the luggage area. As for noise, I don't think anything will stop that completely - its a noisy engine!

A lot of noise comes in from the opening in the C pillar if you don't have any filling in there. Use the search for "footballs" and it will give you some ideas. I know when I stuffed mine it made a noticeable difference.

I don't think you want to install anything on the outside that might trap water/dirt and aid in the formation of rust! More padding inside... Try driving a Canadian Standard with no lower headliner/padding... ugh!

Undercoating might help slightly. The insulation a previous poster mentioned looks like this:

They came from the factory with the 'football' pads in the C pillar.
Mine shows no signs of rust, with the car living in the PNW for 50 years now.

On my 65, I did a couple layers of Peel and Seal on the inside from below the window to, and including, the floor. Dont forget wheel wells. Then the usual padding and carpet. BUT on the engine side, I only used cheap aftermarket tarboard over a bare firewall. Already had made and installed replacement pads jammed in the C pillars. Was still a bit louder than I liked.

The next time I pulled the engine, I installed generic "under hood" insulation on the engine side of the firewall and a better tarboard. Made a very noticable difference.
