I am soon going to need to purchase a wiring harness, and would like to know which in your option is the best one out there and why.
Thanks,

I personally like the OEM ones like KGPR and Aircooled has. They have the factory color coding so wiring is easy following the wiring diagram.
However, I've seen some guys on here using the current wiring because they used a newer fuse box and I kind of like those too because they use standard auto fuses, not the old hard to find style and they come with relays and flashers installed.
So I'm still kind of torn. _________________ -Jared

I do like the clean uncluttered look of the newer fuse boxes. Also it seems that there actually may be less that can go wrong that way. I find what some of these wire harness are selling for insane.
Making my own scares the hell out of me ...... |

I salvaged my '68's original wiring loom and replaced all the damaged wires with VW original wires or wires that are colour-correct and of the correct gauge. I built a second loom to go down the other side of the car to cater for additional instruments should I decide to install some.
To be honest, if I weren't so obsessive (anal?) about using the car's old parts where I can in this restoration, I would have bought a brand new and modern loom. I like the clean and tidy look of it. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Ive been trying to figure out what to do with the harness in my ghia too.
Just came across this,
http://www.ronfrancis.com/prodinfo.asp?number=XP-695
its not cheap, but looks clean.
That rebel harness looks good, and is priced well. |

I sure like the price! But I wonder if everything will work without redesigning the circuits? Will you need to change out the flashers, turn signals ? |

Contact Rebel & speak with Bob Miller. I used one of their harnesses in a buggy install & didn't use any VW switches or other VW bits. Bob was good source of info when I was looking to buy a harness.
But the quality is very good for the money spent on the Rebel harness; excellent quality wire. I work in wire manufacturing, so I know quality wire vs crap wire.

The Rebel does offer a VW "Bug" 12 & 16 circuit wiring harness for a vw. The gentlemen I spoke to said it would work fine for the Ghia. They even have wire harnesses for a VW bus.
The Watson harness is about $100 more, but does have more circuits. Its a hard call. I like having a circuit for AC, if I ever want to go that route. |

I too have been wondering how to fix the rats nest of wires. Yesterday I
bought a chevy tilt steering column($75) that I will have to shorten. I then removed all the wiring from The KG.
I will buy a EZ wiring kit to rewire the car.($150)
If there is any interest I will take pictures of the installation

Don,
I would be very interested in seeing pictures of your install. I didn't see any harnesses for VW at the EZ wiring site, did I miss something?

CiderGuy.......no/I am installing a gm steering column because
ez wiring connectors will plug in to the column. ie-all the wiring for turn & emergency/power out for the fuse panel/high-low beam connector/wire to starter/safety sw/ign coil..etc. plug in. PLUS a tit wheel.
Simpier to wire & THE WIRE IS MARKED every 5".

After reading my post......the EZ wiring kit is for a Chevy/it is plug & play.
It comes with a modern fuse box & the wires are labeled every 5".
To use it you have to replace the Ghia steering column w/a Chevy column
which is pretty easy to do.

After a real lot of research and some soul searching ( wiring a car, scares the hell out of me ) I've decided to go with the rebel wiring harness. It seems to be of the same quality of other harnesses costing much, much more. _________________ ----------------------
