My 64 Ghia is headed to paint soon and I'm going over the details.
The inside of nose/trunk area has a textured paint to it. The car has been resprayed a different color but I am returning it to its original white. Should the trunk/inside of spare/nose area be smooth or have undercoating with factory paint over it? This is going to be a show quality build and was wondering if anyone has an original paint survivor Ghia in the year range of mine that may be able to shed some light. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

I'm referencing my 70 which should be the same- This car is very original and although the front section was resprayed last fall, it was done exactly as original-

The underside of the front hood has the slightly-rough undercoating treatment. It is only on the actual sheet metal areas, and not on the strengthening frame that it is welded to-.

No other area has it- the entire inside area including wheel humps, spare well, near gas tank etc is all as smoothly finished as the outside paint.

This is how my '63's nose was as well in original Pearl White.

Resurrecting - I'm getting ready to do my trunk area as well.

Sooooo......

Are you saying that the underside of the trunk lid should be done in the rough undercoat and everything else in the standard paint? Should it all be standard paint? How about the gas tank, should that just be standard paint?

Thanks.

By 'trunk' I am referencing the front nose of the car, not the engine area in the back, just to be clear. Hood refers to the lid that closes on top of the gas tank/storage compartment....I'm basing my reply on my very original Ghia's paint.

The backside of the hood's sheet metal skin, gets a slightly rougher surface- sort of a mild undercoat. Everything else that is body color, meaning side panels, the extra braces, and supports that are also on the underside of the hood. The hinges, entire inside of the nose, etc all get paint that looks the same as the outer paint. The gas tank, on my cars, has the black paint on it just like the engine tin, except for the unpainted fuel gauge. Hope this helps.

Nope, that's perfect. By saying trunk I'm talking the lid that covers the spare and gas tank.

This helps a bunch.

From the "Painting Emiko" thread:

Thanks djway: I use your post to make this list for textured paint:

Underside of front hood, inner section (not the frame parts)

Inside doors (outer skins)

Inside rear quarters

Outside of footwells - under fuel tank

Wheel wells

Under rear luggage section

Underside where rear wheel wells meet the interior compartment

Underside of the roof (my car has textured residue there)

EDIT: Inside engine compartment, outer quarter skins

I think it may be a good idea to do the complete inside of the wheel wells for the reasons you mention. Maybe the underside of the rear trunklid as well.
