What kind of doctor should I ask for? My insurance is good. I just don't know how to find out. I've kinda thought about my highs and lows as something else. I want to be healthy for my son. I have been trying to figure out why I was able to go for so long without a drink and to fail, it seems I have more questions than answers..... |
jjohnson67, you will not like what I say, but please listen to me very carefully. You have an alcohol dependency and IT IS A SICKNESS. It is not a CHOICE for you to not drink like other people. You will ALWAYS have a DEMON to deal with. It is NOT FAIR and YOU CANNOT CONTROL this without HELP. The really good and simple news is, there is help. It is possible to silence the DEMON with appropriate medication that will return you to the man you once were. These drugs are specifically designed to stop or massively reduce your ADDICTION. It is like as if you NEVER had a problem. It will GO AWAY. While you take these drugs you will find that you need to re-evaluate your life and your situation. There is something going on with you that makes it too easy to listen to the demon. It is not a question of your strength of mind, willpower or relationships etc. This is not a game and THE ALCOHOL DOES NOT PLAY FAIR or by RULES. It is like the line from the first Terminator movie: "Listen, and understand! That Terminator is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead."
You must do some things:
1. Speak to your wife and tell her you are having some personal difficulties and you need help. Tell her you have tried to handle them on your own but you need help to overcome this sickness. Tell her that it has slithered it's way into your life and you did not see it coming to this, but you will do ANYTHING to stop it.
2. Go to a doctor you trust, WITH your wife. Explain your situation. Tell them you want to see a specialist/go to a clinic that can help you rehabilitate. GO TO A CLINIC WHERE THERE ARE SPECIALISTS.
3. Take time away from work to treat this disease. If it means you lose your job, then fine. Your family comes first. If you do not treat this you will lose your family AND your job, and then drink yourself to death.
4. Change your lifestyle. Your family needs you. Money is not what your kid needs, it is time with a father he can respect, trust and depend on. Don't let the DEMON win. PROTECT your FAMILY. IT IS TIME TO FIGHT BACK RIGHT NOW.
You MUST DO THIS - your wife already knows or suspects and she will begin to hate you for not asking for help and hiding things, not trusting her and putting her family in danger. Trust the decisions you made before the ALCOHOL beat you. Ask your wife to help you.
You CAN be free of this and it will make you a new person. You CANNOT do this ALONE. GET MEDICAL ATTENTION NOW. _________________ 1973 1303 with AB-motor - sporadic

Whoa.
Just popped in to say it's my re-birthday. 7 years ago today I dumped the last of my Crown Royal down the drain in a dramatic, traumatic show of events. I'm doin' OK.

Just figured to pop this thread back up, because after 45 years of drinking beer, I have met my quota..........
Actually I had some pretty major health scares, including a heart attack, caused, among other things, by my Beer in-take, Doc said no more drinking, so that was it, gave away a case & a half of Foster's oil cans, and have not had a drink since. First day or two was odd, but I just pound a 16oz tumbler of ice water over and over & I'm good all day/night. The after work beer is missed, but I got a travel water bottle just for that, once I'm home I'm good. If or when we get back to Vw Shows & GTG's, I'll be dry a while, and should be fine.
The main reason I'm doing this, besides the obvious to stay alive, is I have 2 young Grandkids now, and I want to be in there lives for many years, as my folks were in my kids lives.
I've lost 16 lbs. & saving about $60 a week......... _________________ Tom

Way to go, Tom. Feels pretty good, huh?
I quit in 2011, coming up on 10 years without my beer. One of the toughest things I’ve ever done, and is still quite difficult in some situations and on some days.
You got this!

Tom consider yourself lucky if you beat this thing. So many either die from health related issues or accidents caused by the drinking. The choice to abstain seems to be different for every person, I don’t believe in a one size fits all cure. Sometimes looking into the eyes of a grandchild can motivate you to correct certain deficiencies in our lives😀 I’m wishing all people wanting to drop these life threatening addictions success and restoration of health. |

I got really sick February 2020. COVID hasn’t made its way to the US and I I as swell stick to the couch for five days. I couldn’t drink for a week then decided to see how long I could go without my daily 12 pack. 11 months and counting. Had a few moments when I really wanted a beer, but they went away. Now I don’t even think about drinking, I’ve lost 25 pounds and I remember how much I enjoy riding my bicycles and working on my VWs. Life is good. |

I just came across your thread. Back story... I've been living with an Alcoholic for the last 4 years. The impact of this puts a strain on the entire family and those who deal with it. Here's my take...
1. Only you can decide you want to change
2. Consider who your are impacting
3. Consider the impact on your health
4. Consider the impact on the things you could be doing when you aren't drunk
5. Why do you want to quit?
6. Only you can make this change
It got to the point where my sons and I asked my AW to move out. She is no longer a part of our family. She is still in our lives, but the damage she did to her kids. The damage she did to her relationship with her kids is deep and life impacting. Her sons said "We want her out." I won't even go into the shit she pulled with me. All you can do is choose for yourself and take it one day at a time. AA is a good place to start! Not all meetings are the same, so you might have to shop around. I attend Alanon meetings and they helped me understand that I cannot change the Alcoholic and I needed to accept that. Good luck! _________________ Anthony

Evil Clown, I'm glad you are out of the hospital and on the mend. Interesting factor about alcohol causing some cancers.

Wow crukab, good for you. I'm glad you listened to your doctor and will be healthy now. I have a friend who drinks damn near a case a day and I fear he is headed for a stroke or heart attack. Unfortunately he comes from a family where alcohol is the main stable. I suspect that is a factor. I've never said anything about it as it's really not my business. However I don't want to see this lead to stroke or heart attack.

9 months and I'm still dry, not a sip, I just don't drink. I did not do AA or any counseling, I have a real strong will. I've been to a few small gatherings & a couple Vw shows, no big deal, I just don't drink .
No smoking weed either, do to more health issues, that was a bit harder. my drug of choice now is Outshine fruit bars, like popsicles but made from fruit, I kill a 5-6 a day, way better for me. _________________ Tom

Good job! There’s no one way to go about this. Sugar helps and replacing the booze with something positive helps as well.

Soda sense machine in the kitchen, carbonates tap water.
I keep three chilled bottles in the fridge , then carbonate right before I drink
Those two liter bottles are deadly too. It’s the cheapest way to buy it by volume , but then you don’t regulate what you drink _________________ .ssS! |

Not many families that this addiction hasn't touched.
My uncle (just pass away from COVID at 88 years) who drank hard for many years, lost his business, beat his family, chased the snakes that ran up the curtains in the living room, finally said "Enough" and quit cold turkey, said "You just have to WANT to quit!" He had 35 good dry years. Miss him. He had a big heart!
Had a good flying Buddy. Drank until he couldn't keep food down, then checked into rehab... and quit... 5 times! That I know of...
He was 5 years sober when his wife got cancer. I had a visit with her about being glad for her influence that helped him stay sober. She said "As soon as I am gone he will be back at it." And he was. Showed up at our house the day after the funeral totally wasted! Died 2 years later from a stroke.
I really miss him too! Great guy, generous to a fault, good organizer, fun to be with and always inspiring those around him to be their best.
Bumped into an old work Buddy at a VW event this summer. He was looking great, asked about his wife... He said "I quit drinking 8 years ago and I didn't realize she had a problem until then. She got worse and I couldn't take anymore. We're not together".
At my last job I worked alongside a very talented fellow who was/is a party animal. 44 years old, many failed relationships, owns a rusted out Toyota truck, a bed and a cat in spite of working at top paying oil patch jobs all his life. He works part time now because he can't get past 2 or 3 PM without a bottle. Works only in the shop because he won't pass a drug and alcohol test to send him out to a customer site. Brilliant trouble shooter on anything mechanical and a hard worker. What a waste!
I thank my parents from the bottom of my heart for cracking the whip and keeping me clean and sober through those tough teen years when the peer pressure is so strong and my judgment was so weak. But for their influence and open eyes to the experiance of others... go I!
Keep up the good work! _________________ We had the stone age, the bronze age, the industrial age and now we are in the age of mass deception and mind control for corporate profit. (The mass media age) |

La Croix or other non-sugary carbonated drinks if you like the "bubbles".
When I quit Coke I quit cold turkey and suffered through some headaches for a few days but if you don't want to or can't do that, wean yourself off it by cutting down to 4/3/2/1/zero. This works better for some people. I've done it for some other things. _________________ How to Post Photos
