I'm looking for advice.
I'm cleaning up the engine and engine bay of our largely original '69 Ghia. The tin is in good order, and the fan shroud still has the stencilled lettering and a very faded timing decal on it.

I am keen to preserve the look of this as much as possible, and I am not certain how to proceed. The lettering might rub off quite easily, as I know many folk have it faded or absent. Clearly gentle cleaning in the first place, but is there a protective layer that could be put over the top, bearing in mind it will be exposed to moderate heat in the engine compartment (not sure how hot the fan shroud gets!?) and potentially contamination with oil and gasoline.

I'm thinking possibly just body wax over the top, but I also have a clear plastic flexible, spray on wrap which is applied in several layers and is designed to protect bodywork, like a vinyl wrap.

Maybe boiled linseed oil? I haven't used it on anything, si I don't know how it will handle the stamps, or any temps. But some people use it for preserving and bringing back faded paint. Maybe someone else can shed some light .

Those letters look great for being 46 years old. I'd leave them alone.

You could opt for a clear coat to seal the surface, but make sure that the clear coat paint can deal with the heat of the engine.
And once you spray the paint on you can't go back Surprised

I agree, leave it. You don't know what kind of paint was used for the lettering. Whatever you spray/brush on can dissolve the paint in seconds. 46 years and it still looks that good, no reason to take a chance.

The decal is toast, take it off and find a new one to put on.

agreed...it's just a white, rotted blob at this point. love the stenciled lettering on the tin.
