Expertise needed.
I purchased a NOS VW branded aluminum aux. 6V squirrel cage blower motor that the instructions say goes in the engine compartment.
It connects via a cloth/wire hose to the fan shroud heater outlet and then has a clamp to "ride" on the heater box inlet.
It comes with a simple on off switch and @ 12 feet of wire.
It works great when I power it thru a 1 ohm volatge reducer (12v to 6v), and I can even regulate the speed with an old ford heater rheostat. It blows very good! On 12Volts it screams (stopped doing that).
It looks like it is pre -66 since that is when we had 6volt gens ..right?
Is this a OG part? is it valuable? Should I install it? Instructions are old, and yellowed, disintergrating, but the stuff in the plastic and wax paper looks good. No dates on anything, no Part #.

That is not a VW branded item. It looks more like a vintage JC Whitney accessory from back in the days when VW didn't sue anyone who used a logo.
Looking at the instructions, it looks like they have you block off the shroud outlets and just rely on the blower on one side... this would cook the other side's heat exchanger, something VW would not have sanctioned. |

Yep...Thats what it is...I concur. However this is remarkably well made and works as advertised.
I believe the instructions direct to remove only one heater hose, so both sides get air moving over them. So thats what I did.
It looks like a quieter version of the heater fan that people put under the rear seat, except this one goes in the engine compartment and is much quieter. I cant hear it at all, but I feel the output.
I hooked it up. it works, It blows hard from the Drivers side now at idle and the change requires no permanent mods. I used a heater box clamp(the wide one that is usually used to connect the box to the muffler) and it sits on there just fine and tight. Passenger side still works like it used to, and I am happy...very happy.
Yep I get it...VW heat systems work fine as is. I just like to feel air at the defroster vents at idle, and now I do.
Why am I so freaking fascinated with this car? I think I am sick somehow. |

I live in Hawaii, but only until Uncle Sam sends me home (with my first bug) so I thought I would need a good heating system...For wherever they send me next.
This thing rocks the heat! I am blown out when the fan is on, and I cant hear it at idle.
My engine temps drop @ 20-30 degrees when I run it in 70 degree weather. I just cant believe it is so simple and effective.
I mean seriously...with all the complaints of the under-the-seat bilge fans that are sold now, This device makes perfect sense! It is an accessory that needs to come back.
