Quick question...
I've tried to source replacements for these screw plugs for the plastic (fibreglass) rain guard, with no success...

Anyone know of a source (preferably in Europe, postage!)
Or any idea what I could use instead? Tried to dremel something out of plastic, but it's not good enough. The holes are about 9- 10mm (slightly irregular due to age!)
Alternatively, does anyone have a spare that they could put in an envelope for karma points?!

Thanks,
Phil

Couldn't you just fill the holes with silicone, it would become semi firm and could be removed when needed.

Those plastic inserts remind me of the ones used on license plate frames. There are any number of similar expanding plastic inserts that could possibly be sourced at a hardware store.

Thanks to all.
KGPR is tempting, but the shipping would hit you for such a small order!
I finally found a search term that worked, 'plastic screw grommet' turned up some promising looking plugs. I'll take the ones I have into an auto parts place and see if they have something near enough.

In my opinion you are trying to fit plastic inserts in wrong place! They goes in hood and then screws with washers keeps rain tray in place. Holes in hood are rectangular and you can fit even round plastic inserts (automotive trim fasteners comes in different sizes). Wink Once rain tray fitted in place, fasteners will be invisible.

I see your point disc.
I had a closer look. The holes in the hood are indeed square.

The clip though, has a groove which engages if the clip is pushed through the rain guard AND the metal...

The screw then expands the clip to secure.
Just posting for anyone who's keen on the detail, I'll probably just find a vaguely suitable trim clip and go with that!

Hey, I think what he is saying is to push the insert into the square hole and then use a screw and washer through the round hole in the fiberglass rain tray into the nylon square insert.
I have a metal non removable one in the '69, so I cannot help with any photos, but I have seen this in action. The square hole keeps the insert from turning.

When we put in our 3rd brake light, we replaced some of those square plastic inserts & sheet metal screws, with machine screws & nuts... We used the longer machine screws to attach a fitting with an LED strip - but no big deal whatever the reason was. (We have the original inserts & screws somewhere.)

Used rubber washers to keep stuff from rattling. The holes in the hood allow one to hold on to the nut through the grill, while driving the screw from the other side.

Anyway... There are lots of options for a quick fix... You can wait for a bigger order to justify the shipping from KGPR (or where-ever), and swap then - easy to get to, if you don't like the look... But there's nothing really endearing about the look of white plastic, even if it's "authentic".

Scotland is a fairly Modern country....... No?

I cannot imagine being unable to find square screw grommets there. Try an autobody repair supply store.
You do have cars and not sheep....... Right?

Dave

Ho ho!
You're right of course, my main problem was not knowing what the damn things were called! Should be able to get a few of them now.

Cars AND sheep of course (sheep for shorter journeys Laughing )

Thanks to all for advice and comments!
