Been reading these forums for about a year while waiting for the perfect van to come up for sale in canada. Just happened to get my dream machine on friday!
Without boring everyone with the fine print, its simply a 1984 1.9l with 160kms on the odo from the original owner.

Got 2 unkowns in the engine bay, just curious if anyone elses vans have these or can shed some light as to what im dealing with here. First one is this mystery yellow wire going into some weird plug thing off the alternator, inside the hole it looked threaded. I tried to screw it onto the alt post that looks suspiciously like where it was supposed to come from but it sparked like crazy when i touched it there.

How i found it, just laying on the engine

Any ideas?

Next up is this blue wire coming from the right side of the engine bay

It runs along the rearmost wall behind the coolant tanks, then abrutly ends near this wiring loom, I think it used to attach into a different colored wire because the length is right, but curious if anyone can tell. (I have a hunch this is some previous owner/aftermarket wiring and ill be on my own figuring it out but fingers crossed!)

For now im busy ripping out the aux battery wiring under the bench seat, its a mess. Ripping out all the awful hardwired interior lights, and coming up with a plan for the coming months.
Intend on putting in a go westy aux kit, inverter and dual charger, led interior lighting and high power headlights. Will get the local westy specialist to go through the mechanical closer to spring, but it runs and shifts like a champ. Fuel lines are also in the (very expensive) go westy shopping cart even though they seem like new.
Not sure what to do with the furnace thats in there. It gets very cold here, and its a welcome addition, but this thing is HUGE (not a fan of losing the big storage cabinet) and old.

pilot light turns on and runs fine, but cant figure out how to get the blower working. Oh the joys of electrical! Its a shame to delete as the outside wall already has a giant exhaust vent put in. Im torn on this one.

Van has dual propane tanks, how long could i approx run the fridge for on a full fill? 5 days?

Thanks for any help, im sure youll see more questions as I dive into it!
Cheers

Alas, I believe that neither the yellow nor blue wires are original - so you may be left with tacking them down at the other end to surmise their purpose.

Congrats on your purchase - sounds like you're on top of its needs and the choices you'll have to make.

You said that you purchased it from the original owner. Might he/she be able to enlighten you to what these dead end wires were for? Being that the yellow one seems to be hooked up the alternator post, it would seem they were using the alternator to power whatever it went to originally.

Thanks for the replies guys. Unfortunately the original owner passed away, passed it onto his grandson who turned around and sold it, so im left to myself. Knowing that its not OEM is a good start though.

well, in that case, as long as everything is working as it should, I would trace those dead end wires back to their sources and remove them.

Those cheap blue crimp connectors are signs of wiring debauchery indeed.

There is no help other than getting a notebook and starting to trace and document each piece of wire that doesn't look OEM
