I'm sure that I've read somewhere that the '68 speedo is a one off, first year for fuel gauge, but different than a '69+. The speedo in my Beetle works fine, other than a whine that I get after 40mph. Don't know if it's the cable or the gears within the speedo. And the gels have seen better days. So anyhow, I was thinking about picking up another to rebuild while I can keep my current speedo in the car....Can I use any year other than a '68 and still have it look and function the same? _________________ Our 1968 Zenith Blue Beetle: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=619501

You are correct about the 68 speedo and fuel gauge. I have a 72 speedo in my 68 only cause I am using the extra indicator lamps for fog lights and such. Source out a speedo in the classifieds or fix the one you have. Lube the speedo cable first. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.
Numbers Matching VW's are getting harder to find. Source out the most Stock vehicle and keep that way. You will be glad you did.

The whine is caused by small worn out gears.
Take yours apart, it's pretty easy to do. Lube up the little gears and see if that helps first. _________________ Wash your hands

I'm pretty sure you can get a hold of some new gears too. It's a whole lot easier than you'd think, and cheaper than buying another worn out speedo. _________________ Wash your hands
