Are 68 and later rear brake drums wider than 58-64 versions?

I know the nose (area the axle nut sits against) needs to be ground down roughly 5/8" due to the short axle.

Just wondering if these would push the wheel out more? I'm assuming not, but would like to verify.

Reason: moving to Chevy bolt pattern drums for rims

Yes.. 4 lug drums are overall slightly thicker.
So yes the wheel mounting surface is further towards the outside.

I dont have a measurement.. but its not much...

I believe I've found it to be less than 1/4". Only other modification is to drill a brake adjustment hole in the drum.

If not, you have to change backing plates...

Measurement sounds bout right to me..

No.. drill the backing plate.. to mimic 68 up.

Drill the drum screws the drum balance.

You may have to also use an added inside thin spacer to get the shoe vs drum vs backing plate in the right position.

Thanks for the help, the domino effect is amazing.

You'd think it would be simple to change from VW to Porsche/Chevy/Ford on early cars
