Dave what all do you have on your dash there? I guess with all those gadgets you can see instantly if anything is going amiss with your engine?

Altimeter! Wow, that's what I will need when I ever get to Tibet!! 
Why a tranny temp gauge? I never hear of that... will this warn you of overheating tranny (obviously). . . in which case you would stop and check it out rather than blunder on to tranny doom?

If you have a higher HP or torquey engine (like my EJ25) you can abuse the tranny much more than a stock engine so keeping an eye on temps is a good idea.

I get it - you mean with a funky engine swap, the engine and tranny are not matched... you can fry your tranny if not careful..... Did you ever notice any scary temps happening?

I can't help with the cats...I grew up with many cats, and I love cats (and dogs) but their only experience with car travel was going to the vet, and that never went well.
But, I do have one suggestion:
In 2017 you should extend your Eastern leg farther to the East. Much farther.

Great trip and report! So wonderful you gave your son these memories that will last a lifetime, what an awesome dad he has.
Also very inspired to see one can have other hobbies besides keeping a vanagon running!
We hope to set out for extended trips at some point and are closer now than ever...

So I heard about how Photobucket has screwed their customers and blocked links to your pics unless you pay a ransom.... and it has really screwed my topic. Anyone with advice on a hosting site that won't likely hold them hostage? (The samba site will only host pics that have the VW in it and many of my pics do not qualify). Thanks!

Wow! It is hard to believe that it has been three years since I started this thread.
Brendan and I at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in 2015. Brendan is now about my height (almost 6'-4" at 15).
This summer, 2018, Brendan (16 later this summer) and I are going to finish the last part of the trip that he missed since he needed to go home early in 2015. Fortunately Brendan is now doing really well with his anxiety/depression meds so he should be able to enjoy more.
We will start in Denver and go north to
Grand Teton NP
Yellowstone NP
Glacier NP
Mt Rushmore NP
Badlands NP
If anyone is along our route we'd love to say HI!
I am going to drive out to Denver in May (and do a side trip to Syncro Solstice) and leave the bus in Denver while I fly home. Brendan and I will fly back to Denver June 22. Our itinerary is
June 22 fly to Denver stay overnight
June 23-25 Grand Tetons/Jackson Hole
June 26-July 1 Yellowstone (Grant and Canyon CG)
July 2-3 Glacier NP (St Mary CG, east side of park)
July 4-5 Glacier NP (Fish Creek CG, west side of park)
July 6 MT somewhere
July 7 Mt Rushmore then Badlands NP
July 8 Badlands NP
July 9 Iowa? somewhere
July 10-12+ MO then home to MD

Awesome Dave! One route change I would consider if you have time:
Instead of taking the dull and stressful route of I-25 and I-80, go through Ft. Collins (stopping to say hello at RMW) then take CO 14 up the Poudre Canyon and over to Steamboat Springs, then Highway 40 to Dinosaur Nat'l Monument, Vernal, and north through Flaming Gorge. You'll still end up at Rock Springs and head north to Jackson.
We've done this a couple of times and it's one of my favorite drives. Lots of different landscapes, cool small towns, and exceptionally beautiful. Dinosaur is worth it just to see the hundreds of fossils in the side of a mountain/ former riverbank.

Joe, I agree! The route map is not actually showing what roads we will be on, just more to show the locations we are visiting. I definitely want to take more side roads out there.

One other route suggestion I would make is to get back through Bozeman on your return and take Trail Creek Rd to Chico Hot Springs, avoiding the Bozeman Pass. The vistas of the Absarokees are splendid, and that leaves you at hwy 89, south to Gardiner and back through Yellowstone for a drive to Cooke City at the NE entrance. Then take hwy 212 over the Beartooth Pass. A truly amazing drive that opens Memorial Day weekend. From Red Lodge (be sure to hit Sam's Taproom at the brewery!) head east over the Bighorn Mtns and on to Black Hills.
