Day 12:
Brendan and I drove into Glacier thru the Many Glacier entrance and up to the end of the road. Very scenic. The afternoon was again napping and reading... such is life.
That evening we hooked up with Tom (Hutch) and Cammie. They live only an hour or two from us in the MD/VA area and left a couple months ago to go on their epic cross North America trip. As fortune would have it our paths (totally unplanned) crossed at the St Mary campground on this day. They pulled in and we shared a dinner and drinks afterward. Really fun time!

Day 13:
When I planned this trip I paid attention to the Rising To The Sun road. I last drove it in 1978 and I remembered it had many cliff edge areas (I do not like driving on the edge without a guard rail). Some easy research showed that it was much better to drive it from East to West to stay on the inside of the road almost the entire way. As it turned out there was always some sort of wall on the edge so I would have been OK driving it from the West.
I could not really take pics while on the road (Doh) and Brendan was busy trying not to look out over the edge and had no interest in pics. He did OK when we were parked at a big turn out but did well just to hang in there for the drive.
Absolutely one of the most beautiful roads I have driven, if I only could have gotten rid of all the other folks enjoying it with me...
We spent the rest of the day on the west side at Fish Creek CG.

Love it!

Day 14 and 15:
After a few busy days (for us) we decided to take it real easy and just stay close to 'home'. We drove into the little area of Apgar. Ate ice cream, had dinner, read, played on the computer, and generally did as much nothing as possible. For some reason I did not even manage to pull out my phone to take pics.
We were well rested when we left Glacier to head back East. It was going to be some long days...
Day 16:
We left Glacier and drove to Billings MT via Devils Tower. Lots of nothing on the side roads of Montana. Very stark beauty. Nice to not be on the interstate but no services (or cell) for 50 miles at a time so better not have any issues...
And it was blazing hot too. While in Glacier we had times of sleet spritzing. Now we were at 100 degrees.

Day 17:
Drove from Billngs MT to the Black Hills of SD. Along the way we visited with my sister Julie and her kids (and kittens) then Mt Rushmore and the camp.
We camped with Steve Peters who is helping me with experiences traveling/camping in Europe but for some reason I have no pics of us at the camp with him. Steve is a wealth of info since he has been storing his westy in the Amsterdam area for many years.

Day 19 - 22:
Drove to a friends house just south of St. Louis, MO. Herby lives in a small town on a river just west of the Mississippi. He is a rocket friend and loves to fish. Brendan and I decompressed for three days and built some rocket stuff, went fishing, played on the computer, and just were as lazy as we felt like being. Oh and Herby has a friend that keeps a bulldozer at Herby's... so Brendan got some heavy equipment time.
Fishing with my grandfathers split cane pole. It was last used in the 1960's and is at least 70 years old. Still catches fish though.
Every teenagers dream?
And so I finally close out this trip report with two of my favorite pics of Brendan and I . Three years apart...
It was the experience of a lifetime for us and I learned so much about how to work with Brendan and respect his needs. Actually we learned a lot about respecting each others needs. There is a big difference between a 12/13 year old and a 15/16 year old. We both matured.
(And I even have realistic hopes that he will want to do something like this again sometime....)
If you ever can make the opportunity to do this with your kid(s) I heartily recommend it. They are only this age once. _________________ Dave O

The Gary Lee hatch rack is so robust that I can attach the hammock anywhere on it and it does not even budge. I have also used the hatch hinge arm and then closed the hatch. This works just fine too. _________________ Dave O

What an absolutely epic road trip. Memories for a lifetime for sure. I spent several hours going through this thread. Amazing photos and very well put together. Can’t wait to see what your travels in Europe will bring. I aspire to do the same sort of trips with my kids once they are a little older. Thanks for sharing. |
