Those are cool if you can afford them...$350 for the unit, $12/month/minimum with a 12 month commitment and a $25 activation.

Spots are similar but if you go basic (no text or tracking) they are a lot cheaper.
Basic service just has:
-"SOS" (call in the national Guard)
-"Help" (I'm having trouble and this is my location - programable)
-"OK/Checkin" (I'm ok and here's where I am - programable)
-"Custom Message" (Broke down, Please find me a tow company and call them to this location - programable).
$150 for the unit and $99/year ($9.99/month but have to have a year). Not sure about activation...

I use spots all the time at work and although it'd be nice to text or have live tracking for crews, it lets people know I'm ok and when I'm done my day, ready for a helicopter pickup!

Border crossings...not a highlight of an international trip.

given you are not doing Niagara Falls in any real sense, I would suggest
you cross the border at the east end of Lake Ontario. Cape Vincent NY to
Wolfe Island ON to be exact. Small ten car open ferry, no lineups or hassles.

And unless your agenda dictates otherwise, you don't need to battle your
way around Toronto. Crowded freeways, some of the worst on the continent!!

I can offer yard parking with bathroom privileges, drop me a PM if an overnight two hours north of Wolfe Island fits your plans Cool

Are you headed north from fairbanks to the Yukon river? Hard to tell on that map. The drive to Circle is an interesting alternative. And if your all the way to Anchorage, you should probably go check out Seward as well. Plenty of fishing all over the state if your into that.

We do plan on heading North from Fairbanks to the Artic Circle, but not likely to the Arctic Ocean. After the Circle we'll go south to Denali for a couple of days. Then work our way over to Haines, maybe via Anchorage...

We'll have about 3000 songs on the iPhone so no issue for music/radio.

I'll have maps downloaded on the iPhone as well so I can track where we are without cell phone access.

The emergency text services are interesting but we really are not going far off the beaten path. If we do break down I expect another vehicle will be along sometime that we can get a message for help out on.

Our provider is Verizon and they do have coverage in Canada but you have to pay extra for it of course. Very Happy I think we'll be sending text messages and using Skype on Wi-Fi a bunch.

Hornes Ferry out of Cape Vincent NY to Wolfe Island, a very relaxing way to cross into Canada, take 12E just north of Watertown. There is another ferry from Wolfe Island to Kingston (my home town), if you have to wait for that one there's a great watering hole where you can cool your heals:
http://www.generalwolfehotel.com/

If time is short, head east along route 12 (NY) at the top of I81 and cross into Canada at Ogdensburg NY. This is a quiet bridge crossing. The longest I've waited there is about 15 minutes. You can get on the 416 to Ottawa and north and west from there.

FWIW I have found the Apple iMap to suck in Canada. Google Map App is way more up to date and accurate, even in big centres like Vancouver. There's an entire 2-year old freeway in Van that wasn't on iMap the last time I tried to navigate there, And a 30 year old secondary highway that apparently didn't exist in Apple land...Google maps had it and the current traffic conditions.

If you're planning on staying in provincial parks -- just be aware that there can daily entry fees -- and in busier parks and seasons they do some spot checks.

You may want to look into getting a discovery park pass (~$130 cdn) - it's good for a year, and covers all the provincial and national parks in Canada. To boot -- you could probably sell it off when you're done with it. Keep in mind it covers park entry -- but not camping fees.

http://www.pc.gc.ca/ar-sr/lpac-ppri/ced-ndp.aspx

To give you an idea on park entry fees for Banff: http://www.pc.gc.ca/pn-np/ab/banff/visit/tarifs-fees_e.asp?park=1

About $15/day for you and your son - not including campsite fees. So any more than 8 days in the park, or getting caught once -- and its worth it.

Hey Dave O:

I am very envious. Your trip is the kind I want to make - - some day. Having been all over Canada in the past, I can think of a couple hints.

There is a beautiful Provincial Park about three hours north of Toronto (in case night is approaching) called Killbear Provincial Park. It's far enough away from the city that it isn't constantly full in the summers. Another, more out of the way park is Killarney Provincial Park for a real wilderness (Ontario style) experience.

There is a ferry that can take you across Lake Huron from Tobermory to Manitoulin Island and shaves off an arguably uninteresting bit of real estate you would otherwise cross through: https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Chi+Cheemaun+Dock...2655b3f42b

Banff is a very touristy town with a lot for a dad and 12 year old to do together. The Banff National Park campground is conveniently located to allow you access to the town and to the wilderness areas. The campground itself is no great shakes. The Douglas Fir Lodge, adjacent to the campground, has an indoor waterpark and a laundry facility for use by the public. The Sulfur Mountain hot springs are well worth a visit.

It looks like you will be on the Dalton Highway in prime bug season, so be prepared with mosquito nets, etc for your face, and some DEET. You are also going up there around Solstice. Bring sleep masks or you will never sleep. Your son will be amazed at the midnight twilight!

Your timing for crossing Vancouver Island, North to South, does sound pretty tight. You might not want to be forced to drive through this picturesque part of the world so quickly. Vancouver Island is HUGE.

It's pretty hard to beat the beauty of the Oregon Coast, almost anywhere on that coast. The Washington Coast is beautiful too, but a bit harder to access.

Congrats on your trip you have planned! Sounds like it's going to be one for the books! My wife, dog, and I just finished up a 9 week trip. We too left from Maryland and went as far north as British Columbia and far south as Key West. We really wish we would of had the time to make it to Alaska. I'm looking forward to following your adventure!

For your sons need to connect to Wifi, we used our iPhones. It works great if you turn on the "personal hotspot" on your iPhone in settings. We could use our laptop anywhere we had cell service.

Thanks. I am going to upgrade my iPhone 5 to a 6Plus this month and will get "personal hotspot" activation at that time. Glad to know it worked well for you. Very Happy

Liard Hot Springs in the far north of British Columbia is a great place to stop on the long drive. Nice campground there too.

An annual publication called The Milepost (http://www.themilepost.com/) is a helpful road trip planning guide for driving to and within Alaska.

Lots of our highways up here are one lane each way and road construction occurs at a frenzied pace over summer months. The Milepost usually notes known projects for the season but you can also check out these sites closer to the time you'll be traveling for up to date road info: http://511.alaska.gov/alaska511/mappingcomponent/index

You can already do that on your iPhone 5 (as long as you have data). Settings > Personal Hotspot > ON. Then it gives you a password. Connect to the wireless network the phone made with your laptop and type in the code from your phone when it asks for a password. You are now using your cellular data through the laptop...act accordingly or suffer overages!

Also a lot of areas don't have 4G, so I just turn that off to save battery life. You don't really gain much in data speed for normal things like email or web surfing anyway.

I would just throw Kananaskis Country and Canmore into the mix given the discussions about Banff. K-Country is between Banff and Calgary and is an amazing and huge provincial park spanning from the Alberta foothills into the start of the rockies. Busy in the summer but not Banff stupid-busy and not Banff prices either. Lots of trails and beautiful vistas as well as camp grounds. Also the nearby secondary highways in the foothills are breathtaking. When I lived in Calgary I'd take my old Honda shadow for a circular tour from Calgary to Canmore on northern secondary highways (1A) and back on southern ones (22 to 22x). Lots of "wow" moments that had me fighting myself to look at the road!

I wouldn't eliminate Banff or anything, but if you could stay in K-Country and tour Banff...they pretty much border each other. Then you get the rural Alberta foothills ranch experience plus the John Denver Rocky Mountain high.

I'd suggest spending more time in south-central and forgo the arctic circle detour, unless it's a bucket list item. The Richardson, Parks, and Seward Highways are all much more spectacular than the Dalton. And the Kenai Peninsula is a way bigger bucket list item than the arctic circle.

I've done alot of your route with friends on AT&T and had predictably better luck with Verizon.

I Second the recommendation for a milepost. It has evolved into quite the guide, spanning almost all of Alaska and most of western Canadia. Nothing else offers as much info, I think this is they're 65'th year.

I live just south of Bend, OR, so if you get to central Oregon your welcome to stop and camp, or catch up on maintenance. I have a garage and a shop.

Central Oregon is a great alternative to I5, especially if your going to hit Crater Lake. Take one of the passes if coming from Portland, not 26.
Make sure you catch the coast as well. I highly recommend the redwood highway and PCH. After a couple hundred miles of US 101 you start to get jaded, so take your time on a bit of redwood and a bit of PCH. I drove 101 in a vanagon from Washington to La Paz MX, and it is a long, slow road.

I'll be passing right thru bend on the way from Olympic to Crater Lake. I'd love to meet up.

We hit Redwoods NP in CA after that, should be fun.

I'll look into the milepost guide, sounds good.

Thanks! Very Happy
