My 78 bus has some large gaps entering the fan shroud here. Are these normal? Is it missing a top piece? TIA!

Not exhaust, part of the heating system. The lower flaps and covers are missing. So you have cooling air dumping to the outside without doing any cooling in the heater boxes and without feeding hot air forward to the cab. I'm just installing mine if you want to see the pics. |

Hey, thanks everyone! Appreciate the correction as well as all the pics and diagrams. PITA Pan, I'll also take you up on the offer to see your pics of the installation you did. |

It's in progress. I'm doing a molded gasket instead of a paper one, so I have been documenting that. I'll take pics of the next two steps in the process, than that will make sense.
SO far this is the setup for molding the gaskets. The molding material will be grey RTV silicone. The insides of the covers have been sandblasted and then small silicone discs have been stuck down to establish the gasket thickness.
The next step is to glop on the silicone and bolt them in place on the motor. The silicone cures then they come off, get trimmed, and the final install with the flaps. |

Nice! You can also dilute RTV, build clay or tape dams around the area and pour the RTV in. Ray |

That's quite the project you've got going there, PITApan! Quite impressive. I'd have no idea how to do that, but will take some lessons here. |

I have some two part RTV. KISS. Also, this gives me a very close capture of the opposing surface.
I did this routine on the rocker covers on another engine. I was tired of weepy gaskets and replacing them. I used red RTV but too soft. It's holding up so far, and weep free, but will have to see how many remove/replace cycles it will take. These things come off every 15 years if the engine is good. |

These are the holes you've noticed and the holes with the covers on. On the holes notice the ears with the bores for the flap pins. Rights then lefts.

I will repeat my method here as it is easy and works well. I use high temperature copper silicone and lay a bead on the cover and then let it skim over well but not fully set. I then install the cover and tighten it until the silicone makes a good contact with the fan shroud and heater box. If the skin breaks in a few places then so much the better as it will help lock the heat exchanger cover to the fan shroud and prevent wear between the two, but since most of the silicone stays skimmed over the cover is still readily removable and can be reinstalled using a minimal amount of new silicone. |

Yes but RTV will do a much better sealing job on old deteriorated surfaces. |

I did this a few months back. I used a sheet of cork gasket material and the diagrams from Ratwell's site.

To be honest, I had my wife do the work. She's much better at that type of thing that I am. I don't have the patience/attention for small detailed work. _________________ - 1977 CEI Sunroof Bus 2.0L F.I. Hydraulic Lifters

I made them too from cork/ Ratwell. I used RTV to seat and seal them as well. Easy and straightforward _________________ Rebuild your own FI Harness..My Harness
