|
|
Took our 60 SC out of storage to get back on the road. Noticed the Accelerator cable was stuck. Found that it had cut a slot in the transmission housing and after sitting oxidized itself into one part. Not good.
I seem to remember a VW i owned in the past that had a clip that mounted to one of the tranny bolts that allowed the cable to pass through and kept it off the tranny. Was that a dream?
Looked something like this.

It was one piece of wire and the small circle on the side went over one of the tranny bolts. The oval is where the cable ran thru. Wish i had taken a picture
Anyways. I need a new acc. cable and a way to not get caught back in the groove. |

Split case trannys had this before there were cable bowden tubes.
I'm using it to hold my sheath on a '60 style tunnel tranny. |

That is it.
So, what would a 1960 bus have? I have never seen anything other than the boot near the frame tube and the metal tube that goes through the fan housing. |

My '61 has that little guide, when did they stop using it? |

I've made a couple of those for various transmissions out of thick coat hanger wire, works great! I seem to remember a nice illustration of one in the Bentley manual.

I use a Bowden tube for the accelerator cable
IIRC, I pull the metal end off, cut ~10mm or is it 6mm off, and push the metal end back on.
It gives a better feel for the pedal as well as not cutting into the trans case.
you can also use a piece of old fuel line to protect the trans case. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

I had this same problem, I used a short (6 or so inches ) piece of cooper tubing to keep the cable away from the trans. Seeing the fix Clara posted is what I will do next time the engine is out. |

EDIT After looking at the photo again I could probably do this with the engine installed. |

yes, you can install the Bowden tube w/ engine in place.
They re available new from many parts suppliers. p/n 131721551
You might be able to get one at your VW dealer. I think it may have been stock from 1966.

As this part was used on years of bugs, you can often find them at swaps for a buck. IIRC, the shorten advice was in a workshop manual. Maybe Eric knows the page. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |

A used piece of fuel line, or a new piece if you are not a cheap ass like myself works good too until you find the correct part.
1/4 inch is the perfect size to push onto the accelerator cable tube where it exits the body. _________________ WANTED:
