I was replacing the CV axles on my 2wd. Vanagon. When I took one axle off I found a thin film of an old gasket pasted to the mounting surface of the axle shaft. Does anyone have info. regarding this part? It seems pretty thin. And I have not seen it referred to in any posts or in parts kits.

No, it was on the wheel side of the axle between the face of the CV joint and the Axle Shaft. I did see a picture of it in the Bentley, in section 42.7

There have been a variety of parts added to CV's over the years and then discontinued. I suspect your gasket it one of them.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

this shows what I believe I am looking at. It was so destroyed when I took the axle off I could not identify what it was.

If folks are not in the habit of adding any such part when they re-grease and re-install CV's then I am not concerned to go without it..?

Yes, you can safely ignore it and proceed. It was later deemed superfluous.

They are remnants from a time long past. Proceed.
