My '70 Westfalia has this rubber strap that looks factory. One of them is broken.
I'm thinking this is for the owners kit that came with it. Not sure. It's a pouch that holds the owners manual, etc. Material is similar to the mustard seat vinyl....?

Rare, or standard factory issue?

Standard factory issue on all early bays. Rare are the owners that know what they were used for when new. Now most are cracked, or holding a flashlight, flask, or piece.

Yeah, the mystery strap, someone recently found it listed as a "hubcap retainer" or something similar in a parts list. Possibly for the dealer PDI kit but still unconfirmed. Only found on early bays.
It's a beetle rear seat retainer strap BTW, but VW installed it in the bus at the factory it seems.

Here is the pouch with the owners packet. Measures 8" wide × 12". This is a Euro delivery packet. As I see snaps on the pouch, I'm thinking it doesn't belong under that strap....? Heck, pouch might be homemade!...?

Thanks...

From another thread:
Quote:
when they were new and still sitting on the lot, The drivers seat belt was always stuck in there, remember back then, there wasn't any seat belt laws in this country
But they only one the drivers side. bugs had pockets in the drivers door, I would bet, the strap was put there to hold customs pages and bill of lading.. Think about the angle there on, perfect to quickly remove and replace the paper work

Kinda makes sense. Do Euro buses have these?

P.S. I don't travel with a firearm. 1972 Colt New Frontier. Same year as the bus. What a sweet piece.

That strap looks way longer than the Bug seatback holder. I would be surprised if they stretched it that far. Is there a part number on it?

Good idea, since it's right where a cop can see it when you are asked to step out of the car. They probably won't care one bit about the open container Embarassed

Ok, so in my silly picture (revolver and flask) the rubber strap is behind the passenger seat. Behind the driver seat I can see the holes where another rubber strap and cleat would have been. Removed, I believe because of the retractable seatbelt mod by the PO. My question based on the title of this thread is, do buses with these straps have one on each side? Mine is a a 72 Campmobile born in the Fall of 71. Just curious and intrigued by the lack of clarity on such an odd part.

Until this thread, I've never seen one on the passenger side. Thanks Xevin! Now I know why some people call it a map strap. I thought that was a stupid idea for behind the driver's seat, but it makes perfect sense behind the passenger. Embarassed

One member reported that his 72 had straps on both sides. Whether either side was standard equipment is to be determined.

The 68-72 parts manual list:
Part# 211 857 817, Retaining Strap- Warning Triangle, Qty 1. Does not specify left or right.
It is talked about in this thread:
Part Identification Help: VW #211 857 817

Could you please post the part number of the strap on your passengers side?

Sorry Tcash. Could not find a part # embossed on the rubber. Tried to take the cleat off for a # but stripped the screw and it would not come off. This is the best info I could get.
