Looking at other threads, my assumption is that this is indeed my turn signal relay...Turn signals work, flashers work, however, when I turn the turn signal on, it flashes once in the speedo, then never again unless I turn it off, then back on again..still only lights up once, then nothing. From what I've read, it's probably my turn signal relay...however, I've not seen this particular one for sale anywhere....suggestions?

If there are only 4 things sticking out of it, probably.

Early '68 used those expensive 9 way flasher, but then vw got smart and figured out how to use the 4 prong one. It looks like the other one is the headlight relay.

I've seen issues with aftermarket 4 terminal flasher relays, the "Kbl" terminal for the dash arrow light not being set up properly. And when you run into that, you end up not using that 4th terminal and using it like a 3-terminal flasher.

So... personally I'd just use the VW/Euro style 3-terminal flasher relay to begin with... which VW used from 1971 to 1998 on almost all models. They are cheap, and easy to find and the only modification you'll need to do is to use a piggyback adapter to connect the wire for the Kbl dash light to terminal 49a. You can get that style relay under such part numbers as 111953227A, 111953227D, 211953183A, and 191953227A - and at local parts stores under part numbers such as FL-35 or EP-35 or EF-35.

Yes, that is the replacement.

One thing you might try on your old flasher (turn signal) relay (it works on some flasher relays but not all)...
Identify the wire that runs from the flasher relay to the bulb in the speedo (it should be blue). It should run to its own terminal on the relay marked "KBL".
Remove this wire from KBL and connect it to 49a.
Test your turn signals and E-flasher. The speedo bulb will flash opposite the turn signals.

If this doesn't work you may just need a new flasher.

Wolfsburg West sells a direct replacement (8 or 9 wires, I think). It's about $65 and easy to install.

^ I had that option, but "converting" to the 4 way flasher is easy and costs a helluva lot less.

Except, he doesn't have or need an 8 or 9 terminal flasher, as he has a 211953215C... which is what we've been talking about above. It does look kind of like the 67-early-68 flasher at a glance though.

You cannot find that relay in that form factor new any more. Sometimes you see them in the Classifieds but there's always some risk on used parts.
I don't think that VW had them made in that form factor since the early 70s. That photo of an NOS one was from a long-defunct site who wanted 110 dollars for that part (10+ years ago)

I wonder if I should grab one of those myself-- my original works fine but no telling when it will bite the big one

holy cow! I've never seen an NOS one go for anywhere near that cheap. (and even better with the current exchange rate) Makes me wonder if someone found a carton or two in the back of a warehouse somewhere! I wonder if there's a date code on these... the photo isn't good enough to make it out if there is one. Oh, wait, it's Hella. I think it was one of the other brands that had a date code on them.

Well, if it works... as I said above, I've seen aftermarket 4-terminal units where the "KBL" dash light terminal isn't set up like VW did, and you end up just using it as a 3-terminal flasher. If that's the case, you might as well just buy a 3-terminal flasher in the first place.

Ok, so this is my actual relay. The pic I used for reference in the first post is different. Mine only has the 3 prongs labeled KB1, +49 (power) and 49a... If I turn the emergency flashers on, the directional lights in the speedo flash as they should. When I turn the turn signal on, left or right, the direction light flashes once, then no more...I took this relay out, cleaned it with contact cleaner, but still does the same thing...so my guess is that it's bad...

That is still actually a 4 terminal flasher - it just doesn't have a dedicated terminal for 31(ground) - it is grounded via its mounting to the cowling support, without that ground it won't work. (VW went with dedicated ground points starting for model year 1969)

But yours did work with the heavier load of 4 bulbs, but not with just two. And you've confirmed that the actual lights outside the car are also not flashing?

Are you sure that the speedometer indicator lights (oil, gen, turn signals) are wired correctly ? The common connection for all three bulbs should be a switched +12v (#15 circuit), not ground.
