Hello all. I have had a very annoying problem that keeps coming up with my 1971 karmann ghia. About a year ago I compleatly replaced every soft gas line on my car. About a week ago the line under my tank dicided to start leaking (I do not run clamps up there). I poked it and it just started to rain gas all over my driveway. A full tank wasted because I did not have anything to catch it nor did I have new lines Confused . Now, today I walk into my garage only to smell a gas smell again. It is a very small leak coming from where the gas line goes through the back left wheel arch. I have it setup like this:

Hard line, clamp, soft line, clamp, fuel filter, clamp, soft line, clamp, and hard line.

Am I doing something wrong with the installation of these lines? It seems silly that they are failing so quickly? Also, another "new" line was about to break inside my engine bay until noticed it and replaced it quickly. I carry about a 1.5m of soft gas line in my car now thanks to this. I thought they were supposed to last about 4 years minimum. I do not drive it in harsh conditions. Only in the cold winter and the hot summer with the exception of some rain.

And yes, this is real german gas line.

Anyone have any advice or see something I am doing very wrong? Thanks

Now I've got to worry about my lines!

just curious, where did you get the line from?

the set up with clamps is correct- now time to install a valve under the tank Wink

I gave up on braided fuel line years ago because it would rot away in 2 years or less, consistently. I was buying the cheap stuff and some have said the true german made braided line is good, and the mm size does fit better than sae but I do know this for a fact: USA made gates rubber line withstands the test of time.

Or just run meal lines front to back...

I have seen the same thing with the braided stuff. I can only attribute it to Ethanol Gas.

I have started replacing mine with Gates FI hose that is made for Ethanol Gas. It is 1/4 inch but when I tighten with a good quality clamp its been Ok -no leaks.

Since my metal fuel filter is 1/4 inch not an issue.

For some reason this seems to only happen with the line from the fuel tank. I have not seen it in the engine bay or elsewhere where there is a soft line.

There may have been some bad runs or cheap replacement braided lines on the market. Perhaps you got some bad stuff. I just pulled some 15-20 year old german braided off a bug. It was in perfect condition. I replaced it anyway with green german braid 4.5mm. No clamps needed. Personally I havnt received any of the bad stuff. Try buying from another source. Im running the 1/4 inch line on my car, its more work and the fit is less than perfect (except on the 1/4 fuel filter), clamps necc.

Any green hose I had like that was for vac lines, not for fuel - used with the distributor. Are you sure that is fuel line?

Thanks for noticing Nova. I was lucky enough to get the end of the roll with the label. Its specific for gas and diesel fuel line. the 1/2 mm makes it very tight too.

What about something like Russell Performance? I think they make a set that look like stock black braided hose.

5mm ethanol-approved rubber line from Flennor is available here:

Some in the bus forum are using. I debated between this and german braided when I replaced my lines and decided on the braided. Now I'm not sure I made the right choice.
