I am trying to establish how many sambas with sliding side door/s survive today.
They were only an option during production years 1966-67 and are rarer than hens teeth.
If you own a true original German samba slider or you know someone who has one, please post, preferably with a picture so that a photographic record is established for posterity.
Many thanks. I'll start
This one is based in South Wales (UK)

I've sat in five sliding door buses in the U.S. I'll let their respective owners decide whether to post them up here. _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

The sliding door was an option beginning in 62 or 63 - I can't recall seeing any sliding door sambas older than '67 though. Be neat to see a sliding door with corner windows. |

I've seen quite a few split busses with sliding doors but very few sambas.
It's the samba slider that is very rare. I am hoping to find out the actual number of surviving samba busses. |

Campingbox,
I doubt you see a samba with a sliding door other than 66 or 67. It was only these 2 years that the slider was was made available as an optional extra on sambas only.
The option was available on other deluxe 13 and 15 window busses before this date however and you are right in the option was availble from 62.
I found another samba slider however which I think is in the US.

The sliding door option was offered mid 1963, ~10K buses after the change to innie engine vents.
In April 1963 at VIN 1 096 222 according to http://oacdp.org//progref6268/a004.jpg
Hm, that says for type 21 ie panelvan. I am not sure when it was offered for other models. I have seen 64 standard microbuses with sliding doors.
I saw a 63 panel with sliding doors both sides in the UK some years ago.
Where did you find the info that it was available for sambas only in 66-67? Interesting!
here are some threads on slider buses:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/search.php?search_keywords=slid*
&search_terms=all&search_author=&topic_starter=0&search_forum=4&search_time=0&search_fields=titleonly&
search_cat=-1&sort_by=0&sort_dir=DESC&show_results=topics&return_chars=200
cut and paste the whole thing^^^
I searched for "slid*" , chose split bus forum, chose title only.
This finds slider and sliding, which can apply to sunroofs and windows and seats as well as doors. Some say slider w/o saying door. There are a bunch of threads on sliding door buses.
This has some good pics:

Clara,
The information came from Volks Works Camper magazine in June 2009.
See below. Forgive the poor quality pictures.

That magazine article is not correct.
My '63 parts list contains supplement 6, dated '64 which shows sliding door parts and mentions models 241 and 244 in multiple places.
I have a second '63 parts list with a '65 supplement, a third with a '67 supplement, and a fourth with a '68 supplement. All four versions of that page show deluxes listed.
I think sliding door busses were more common in Thailand, I wonder if there are any early survivors over there? |

I watched one get crushed at the scrap yard nearby last summer...talk about horrifying. I begged and pleaded with the owner of the yard to let me buy it off of him for triple of what he gave, but all I could get out of him was, "I'm sorry sir, we don't sell cars here,we sell scrap metal, If you want it after it is crushed then we can talk" Only Split I've come close to owning...I F***** hate people sometimes
By law I don't think they can buy cars without titles anymore, and I'm sure that factored into why he wouldn't sell, but hell, i woulda bought it without a bill of sale. only thing missing was a front windshield and a turn indicator. Had the keys, engine, full interior, hell even the ragtop and floor was in decent shape...hopefully I don't give people nightmares

You may have been able to buy the M-code and VIN plates. Together with the registration document, a new one could theoretically be built.
I found this double slider during a search. Looks cool!

I thought the same campingbox when I looked at the parts list. However, there must be a reason why no samba sliders have been discovered outside 66 and 67. It may be worth me contacting the VW museum to enquire. If only out of curiosity. |

This one makes it 8 so far.
They are rarer than I thought. Unless you know otherwise.

The SB/CW double slider up above is mine and while there are a ton of pics in the build thread mentioned I figured the people looking here would be interested in some older pics I have from the PO as well:
I believe them to be from some time in the 80s but not entirely certain... _________________ '66 SO-42

I have often wondered, are the inward pressed vents standard on The later models a coincidence or were they introduced so as not to get in the way of the sliding doors?
Anyone shed any light on this?
Also, it appears as though the sliding (windowed) doors on the 66 and 67 were being tested as prototypes in readiness for ithe sliders standard inclusion with the first bay windows in 67. Just a thought. |

Managed to trace one more.
They are becoming more difficult to find now.

Standard (3 windows, non-kombi) sliders don't count? You're specifically looking for 13 window or more split slider? _________________ 77 Westy - Cape Cod Sage
