Ive been planning a trip to lower Baja for a while now. My friend is driving his 73 camper. We leave Thursday morning from Durango, Co. Super stoked. Been working on the bus for the last month and I think we re ready.
We plan on crossing at Yuma and heading south to San Felipe. South from San Felipe through Puertocitos,Cocos Corner, Chapala, Guerro Negro and beyond.
Ill do my best to update and add photos. Wish us luck ! |

First off, that sounds like a great trip! Should be a ton of fun. Mexico is so much nicer the farther you get from the border.
Since you drive this particular bus on a regular basis, I was wondering if you could comment on the effectiveness of the scoops. They get a lot of bad press on this site. Realworld-based experience would be appreciated. Don't mean to hijack your thread. Just looking at your pic I noticed them. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Be safe, and have a great time! Pay for camping spots at private places whenever available for the added little bit of security. |

Oh God, the dreaded "scoops" conversation......jk
I ve gone back and forth and I guess my engine builder talked me into it. I did a bunch of research and found that they work well getting more air to the engine bay and in turn better cooling. I have a 2109cc motor. I am not an expert of any sort regarding VWs. I simply love them and like to work on em and drive em.
Thanks |

I took a border cop from the Guerro Negro check point to town and back for beers once and that made me cool every time I went through there. You might want to go check out Punta Abriojos and the estuary at Campo Rene. Be safe!!!
Gone as far down to Gonzaga Bay (Bahia San Luis Gonzaga). Awesome place which took 40 miles worth of washboard to get to. May be on your way. Enjoy it and take lots of pix but again, be safe!!!! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

What's up split forum? Mtnbus has sent me a few pics and asked me to post them and update. mtnbus' friends are in a '71 westy (not a '73) with a 2175, 002 w/LSD and 15" general grabers. I get to hang out with these guys and their buses on a regular basis and they are great!
Today they drove some 560 miles from Durango, Co to Quartzsite, Az where they are camping tonight. Both buses are running good and they seem to be having a blast. Who wouldn't be, right? They should be crossing into Mexico tomorrow at Los Algodones.
Early this morning
Quartzsite
Graham Master Flash, in the flesh! Man Frankie (the panel) is looking good.
