If it is supported by the channels above the windows and not some hack, you should be able to push upwards on the sides about 1/4" to 1/2" to get it to pop out of the channel. Don't rush, and have someone to help you. |

FYI if you use the forum search engine on thesamba, highlight the word Forum on the top of this page, it will allow you to select Search in a drop down menu, when you get to the search page:
In the drop down box next to the word “Forum:” Select, Bay window Bus
In the drop down box next to the word “Search previous:” Select, Search title only
In the drop down box next to the word “Sort by:” Select, Replies
Then enter key words of what you are looking for in the “Search for Keywords:” field
You can use AND to define words which must be in the results, OR to define words which may be in the result and NOT to define words which should not be in the result. Use * as a wildcard for partial matches
With the search method above
Wood AND Headliner =

Mine had the falling white powder syndrome also. I pulled mine down carefully marking where the seams were with a sharpie on the side rails. I sanded mine down just to the wood under whitewash finish and put a coat or two of urethane on them making them have a nice warm color. I also glued and clamped any delaminated egdes while they were down.

I think the light pops out the rivets are holding the bracket.
Gently try and pry the light out. If it will not come out. Drop the panel and unplug it.
Good Luck

Gently push on one of the short side of the light, you might have to wigged it a bit, try to slip a credit card under the rim/edge of the light, pull down gently, if it does not work try wiggling it a bit to the other side(long ways) try pulling down gently with the credit card… you may have to play with it until you get the feel for it, if in the end if you break it, you can always get a replacement… we all have had to learn the hard way sometimes; you break things while learning sometimes ;0) _________________ Current VWs 71 T2 Westy SO-72/6(Miami), 71 Crew Cab, 2015 GSW TDI

Looks exactly like my headliner, which I removed from a 71 Westfalia a few days ago. I'm replacing the ply however and wrapping it in vinyl.
If you push the edges of the headliner, starting at one side, then move to the other, I found it just eventually 'popped' out.
As for the light I disconnected it from above and took it out with the headliner.
Cutting the ply and reinstalling this weekend. |

just pull them straight off.
use caution as the red wire has 12V at all times and if it touches the body bad things can happen.
unhook your battery to negate this problem. _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Careful pulling them off, they tend to stick on the terminals and the plastic holding that up is brittle, supporting the metal part of it you are pulling it off of with needlenose pliers saves all sorts of trouble later. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here

Spray the connectors with some WD-40 and give a little wiggle as you are pulling them off. As busdaddy posted needle nose pliers work well.
