Sad that his ego/idiocy ended what was an enjoyable show. The personalities made it so. For proof, consider the pathetic USA version of the show... same formula, different personalities... and an utter yawnfest. |
X2. I agree 100%. I never cared for the "American" version of top gear, even though they tried real hard to duplicate some of the stuff the Original BBC version had already done, it just wasn't the same. I'd rather watch re-runs of the BBC show, over new versions of the American show.
I really liked the show for what is was... entertainment. Sometimes I even learned something. It was always good for a laugh, and my wife and kids liked the show as well.
Sorry to see it go. I guess I can get a different TV package now, and save some money. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Complete television genius. If you do not see the humor, fun, and greatness of something this, I do not know what to tell you. Check out the Viet Nam special, too. One of the very best episodes. _________________ nothing |

No doubt those were some fun stunts.
Funny you mention the Viet Nam special, though. I came to believe his anti-Americanism was real, not good-natured joking like his "slope" and "n-word" comments. It would have been hilarious if the rednecks in Alabama had killed them. _________________ The consequences of your decisions should not be confused with fate. |

I have never found criticism of war to be anti-American. He can say whatever he wants about us, as can anyone else. He was being critical of our involvement in the Viet Nam war. Just like many of us Americans are, and have every right to be. Nothing new there. He has also espoused the US as allies in WWII and given credit where credit is due.
Funny to see them killed in Alabama? Really? _________________ nothing |

Irony by definition is only good if some people don't get it.
It's certainly tragic when someone dies, but the delicious irony would make it worthwhile.
They went there with their mean-spiritedness, bigotry and superiority complex, knowing Americans can take a joke and laugh at themselves. They actually said the goal was to see if they could get each other killed with what they wrote on the cars. If the stereotype had come true and those hicks had killed them, it would have been one for the ages. _________________ The consequences of your decisions should not be confused with fate. |

Virtually impossible to read any irony into the wording of your original statement.
If you really thought that any of "their mean-spiritedness, bigotry and superiority complex" was real, you are the one who doesn't get it. _________________ nothing |

British humor is 100% different from United States humor. Sure he took it a little far sometimes but stil _________________ Wash your hands

Word. Just look at me.
But really, I never saw the program as some sort of platform for Clarkson to jab at Americans. He was having fun, but like his entire country, is a decade ahead of us on thick skin. How often do Americans jab at other countries in our domestic programming? I don't hear anyone here defending Russia for the bashfest they took on their episode...
Like most Brits I've seen on TV since I first had cable in 1980, his humor relies more on our interpretation and depth than his need to emote. American humor has to be set up, timed, spelled out for you in tremendous detail and with laugh tracks to bolster. His was hung out there, with (perhaps only in the famously over-sensitive U.S.) too much faith in the depth of his audience. _________________

So do I. I don't really watch the regular episodes but I have watched every special a few times. My wife even likes watching the specials. _________________ 1964 Beetle
