1987 Syncro (solid shaft, decoupler, front diff lock; all only used off road).

I was under my van tonight trying to diagnosis a noise, which I believe to be related to the wheel bearing, but that is for another thread.

In my troubleshooting I jacked up one front wheel to rotate to see if I could hear anything abnormal. I heard a soft "tink" as I started to rotate the wheel, then when I reverse the rotation I hear another soft "tink". I now crawl under the van and look at the axel shaft where it comes out of the front diff, rotate the wheel back and forth ever so slightly (like an inch at the outer circumference of the tire tread). I notice the axel shaft turns, but there is a tiny bit of slop before the inner CV starts to rotate with the shaft, and again same in opposite direction. It is not much slop/play at all, but not what I expected to encounter, but I have not had to do any other front end work since owning the syncro.

CV bolts look and feel snug just by fingers, have the correct spacers, boots look good. Started raining and was getting dark.... decided to take a look tomorrow and post here for any advice.

Is the play normal when rotating the wheels? Any tolerance in what is unacceptable?

Thanks for any helpful advise.

Cheers!
Ben
