Building up a Type 1 IRS drag trans.

Early IRS trans had a keyed reverse gear and later (70's) has a splined reverse gear. I'm now using an earlier IRS gusseted case this season that will use the keyed reverse gear. I could use the later reverse gear with fabricated case adapter to contain the longer tube bearing reverse shaft spins in, but larger FTC gears don't permit enough clearance for a "spacer" or shims so forget that.

Obviously, no abuse of reverse gear in drag racing (unless shift lockout fails!) but is there any reason to avoid the keyed reverse gear other that less resistant to shear-failures than the splined gear? Opinions? Experience with failure?

Thanks

Yes, it will OK. I used this style of case for racing for years. The newer single side case is much stronger. I changed over to the 1976 and newer ones a few years ago and am happy with them.
