individual boots without the clips are sold by many vendors.

While the subject is up, does anyone know where to buy the tool to put the boot rings on with. Not sure about the ball joints, but also the tie rods. I wound up using safety wire, but would like to have the tool to put the rings on with.

Maybe this is the tool you are looking for:

That tool is for axle boots and is not the same at all.

I just take the securing ring and work it around the boot, I carefully open it a bit ( like a slinky ) and go around it slowly working it on the boot and into the groove that the boot is in to secure the boots. A LOT harder to describe than to actually do, just go slow and be careful not to poke any holes in the boot if you have to use a screw driver to assist you.

I'll have to go look, but I think I saw it in the Bentley manual. It's a round, tapered cone type of set up, and one end does the big rings, and one end does the small ones. The tool fits over the boot and you slide the ring. It expands it as it moves, then it snaps over the end, onto the boot. Neat tool, but haven't seen anyone sell it.

OK, went out to the shop and in the '66 Bentley manual, Front Axle section, Pg 21, Fig 38, it shows the conical sleeve for the ball joints. It's labeled as 'VW 780'. There must be a different size for the tie rods. Great looking tool, just haven't found one. I could never get the rings on the tie rods, so I used safety wire.
