So heres whats going on... Nothing about my climate controls work, the lights or the switches. Also, the light for the cigarette lighter doesnt light up. So i decided to pull out the radio and ash tray to take a look and i found some cut wires, some butt connectors and duck-taped ends...
First off, these wires were both cut and they look like they may belongg together, grey with blue stripe. But the one on the left looks like a lighter blue so im not entirely sure. The wire on the right goes to the light for the cigarette lighter so im guessing thats why its not lighting up.
Next we got these three wires. They go into one of those plastic sleeves together and it looks like they go out into the front of the grill almost. Im not entirely sure what they are.
The comes these. No clue what happened here. It looks like he switched the colors around and went black for the ground but i dont know what the wires were for originally! One of them goes into this blue thing which the gies into some part of the climate controls i believe.
But the loose ends were just duck-taped off.
Anyone have any ideas what thes loose wires are for? Im not too skilled at reading wiring diagrams and such so the Bentley hasnt been to helpful too me but im gettin there.
Any ideas on what i should do would be awesome!
Its an '84 van with AC
Thanks in advance,

It would be a really good idea to get a multimeter and find out what the wires actually do. power, ground, power with key on only, power with lights on etc.
Knowing this will help you. |

Do you currently have power at the cig lighter?
- If yes, go on...
(If no, you have more checking to do - time to pull the glove box -or- entire dash)
Test wire #1 to see if hot only with lights on (make sure dash dimmer is at full brightness):
- If yes, wire it up & you should have illumination, dimmable @ the headlight switch.
(If no, you'll need to look for another loose wire or run one to the illumination circuit)
Pic #2 looks like new butt connectors tied into the original (3-conductor) speaker wiring.
Pic #3 is <possibly> from the front blower switch for power to the fan in the air box...???
Even <IF> correct, this info will only help you so much. At this point, you gotta start digging
and find your own answers...see what goes where & what it's connected to under there...

Your best hope to sort this out is to learn how to read those diagrams in the Bentley. The current track method, once you get the hang of it, is really easier to work with than a literal wiring diagram (which would be hopeless spaghetti in a modern complex system).
A place to start is this primer:

I, too, have an 84 but to answer your questions I would have to get the Bentley out and look up the wires you show based on location and colors -- so you can eliminate the middle man and delve into it yourself. |

You do have a small mess to clean up and it will take some time and patience. Take your time looking over the schematics in Bently. Bently wire diagrams look overwhelming at first, but are super simple after a little time spent looking them over. It will tell you everything you need to know, wire colors, wire harnesses, termination points, etc. I would not recommend arbitrarily hooking wires up to see what works. You will be spinning your wheels big time. |
