My 71 is missing these but I saw from some old pics of my car that it had them at one time. How do they work? Some type of defroster?

They are part of the flow through ventilation system. Air from outside enter via the black vents behind the rear windows and into the car through those vents.

Its a passive system.

Ok Thanks. My headliner was replaced at some point and I guess they never reinstalled them. Never seen those before as all the Bugs I've had before we're pretty 70.

Other way around, the air rushing past the outside crescent vents draws cabin air out of the car through those vents.
It enters the car through the dash vents.
