So, howdy! Guess first off, my name is Jake and Ive only had one other thread on this awesome site! http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=544851&highlight= devils in the details and that post needs some updating big time! Im going to drop the short story to the bottom so we can get the meat and taters quicker!
Im not too sure exactly what the years of the rigs he was wanting to get rid of are but Ive attached photos to start the arguments lol It didn't take a lot but the dually had its difficulties getting up the tree alley to pluck the baja's and bus out of the snow to tow them back down to the trailer. I didn't get much of a great look at the rigs until we had them out and on the trailer. Surprising enough the bus had almost 0 rust other than the topical junk on the roof. I still can't believe he gave me all this for free. If any of you guys have questions just ask, I don't want to drag on the details of this find and turn people off of.
1. Can you match a number to a bay? He had an extra engine laying in the snow and if I can rebuild it I want to! Especially if its a match!
2. What are the better places to find engines at if that option doesn't work. If I can't get the original up and running, I would like to get something with great performance power.
A little back story about this little find. I have a VW tattoo sleeve and randomly a lady at PetCo started talking to me about her "old bus they never got running." After talking to her about everything under the sun, other than the bus and if it was for sale, she finally gave me her sons number. After talking to her son, stationed in Alaska with the Army, I finally got the dads number. After talking to the dad, we set up a time to meet up last weekend. I took a 4.5 hr drive up to Addy from Kennewick and met some of the most awesome, salt of the earth people Ive ever talked to! After talking to the man for 4 hours about nothing VW related, he ended up giving me all the VW's in his pasture! I ended up hauling back what you saw in the photos, and Ill be going back up for more in a couple weeks! I own my own gun business, and he even ended up buying 5 guns from me THAT NIGHT! This last weekend was amazing and I can't believe I FINALLY HAVE A BAY!!!!!!

Hi there, congrats on your finds.
EDIT: Wildthings beat me to it. Yes on the gallery please.
1. We could match a factory engine petty close to the chassis if they're different years.
2. We'll talk about that when you have torn into this one and provided copious amounts of quality photographs.

Hard to tell from the pics, but from the seats & steering wheel color I think that Squareback might be a '66 "Pigalle" and possibly worth saving if it isn't too far gone...

I uploaded the pics but for whatever reason they won't work? Even the other links didnt show up as photos, only links? I don't know how to change that.
The guy DID have a big white and red beard! It was awesome! He had one guy bring him a bug in the 70's sometime he said, and all of a sudden he became the "VW guy" in his area and people just started bringing them to him! lol
Ill have more photos this weekend when I get to it. They're currently at my my uncles place because I have 6 other VW's at my house right now! Once I get out there, what should I take photos of? Any requests? Ill take a few photos of the VIN and door tag and engine bay. _________________ 2012 Tiguan 4motion

Ok, so I snapped a few photos yesterday after I got the new tires put on. These are the VIN numbers from the dash/door/engine bay and one from the only engine that was used in the group of cars.
Is there a way to match the engine to the bus? Any characteristics from one model's engine to another? For example, can I tell that a baja has a bus engine or one that should have been in the other square back?
This engine is in the purple baja bug right now. when we pulled the group out of the trees, the bus had a hole dug under the bumper to pull it out. Behind the baja bug there were a set of exhaust pipes that were bus or bug pipes and the.

Unless that bus is a Euro market model that engine couldn't have come from that bus (wrong number even if it was), it would have had a type 4 GD engine like this:

THANK YOU!!!! He didn't have any other engines up there with the boneyard. Is there a way I can find if it was a "euro" edition? And another stupid question that I know Ill get :2gunfire: for.... What is the model of that bus called? Ive heard type 2, transporter and kombi. I know its a "bay" and other nomenclature about most all VW's but still somewhat new to the air cooled scene. Just wanting to learn what to look for when I need parts. Especially the pan replacements for the battery tray... _________________ 2012 Tiguan 4motion

I just got wind of this thread, Kennewick Man (that would have been a good screen name!). What you stumbled across would be the find of a lifetime for most of us.

To answer some of these questions:
All buses (and pickups, and panel vans, and any flat-nosed VW with the driver sitting there up in front above the front wheels) is a Type 2. That includes splitties and bay windows. A "Transporter", AFAIK, is the station wagon variant, with seats for passengers inside. A "kombi" is the enclosed "van" bodystyle, as opposed to pickups.
Battery tray is different for pickups, and I think also changed at the 1971/1972 change in body (tall real lights) but I may not have that right. Left side battery trays are still available as Genuine VW (do Brasil) but right side ones are available only as aftermarket. Gerson Caicedo at klassicfab.com makes the best replacement metal. Original German metal is still the best. _________________ John

Finally had time this weekend to get the bus sorted a bit. I spent some time getting the inside front cleaned up and all the rat poo and debris removed this weekend. Seems pretty solid after getting into it all.
Experienced bus owners!!!! PLEASE pipe up with things I need to take care of if you see anything! Reading page after page and finding the little things like random brackets or bushings to replace/repair is a lifelong daunting task fueled by happenstance and "right thread, right timing!"
Tasks on the horizon;
1. Remove and restore fuel tank and components.
2. R&R lower heater ducting
3. Replace battery tray
4. R&R windshield
5. Finish engine
6. Field tips and direction with repairs!
