Are there supposed to be a hole down there??

They all have the hole like that. I believe it's a feature of the machining process. In other words it's not there for any functional reason, just a by-product of how the end of the shift rod is manufactured. The hole doesn't go all the way through the part.

Ok i see. I wondered if it was made from wear.. I’ll go on with the cleansing now.

The Vanagon has a similar socket on the side of the tranny. I drilled a small hole near the bottom so that I can occasionally pump some grease into the socket. Doing something similar on the Bay shifter might be a plus.

I always assumed it was a drain hole.
