New speedo??? - FINISHED!!!

I want to swap out the old stock MPH gauge, and put in a more relevant KMPH gauge (Canada). I seen a quick and dirty GPS version on speedhut.com. As well pulled the Joe Poty Sand Rover logo from an old ad. Wondering if anyone runs one of these gauges and if they like it, as well any input on the design.

Well, I ended up initially getting a Speedhut GPS speedo and liked it so much I got a matching tach. These are in my supercharged rotary Bremen Sebring. Excuse the glare, as I am not a very good photog.....

One thing I absolutely love about the GPS speedo is being able to change wheel/tire combos without calibrating or touching anything. Lots of other features which are handy on that speedo as well.

When I picked up the buggy the speedo was the only guage, is there much to running the oil pressure gauge and tach?

I selected autometer Ultra Light gauges.. I like them, they work good but are a little expensive.

A buddy just ordered some speedhut custom gauges.. He likes them says they work good...

Anyways check out my sand rover t bug build in my signature.. different "style" for a sand rover than yours/most but I live in a concrete jungle known as IL... so its setup for the street...

looking at getting a 2276 soon! I Forgot did you get the rocker issue corrected? Does it fly/scoot well?

not really. the oil press gauge has a special sender and harness that can be lengthened. I did that on mine. The tach is easy hookup as well.

The speedo seems simple as you just hook up power and mount the GPS unit... I believe the tach is the same where you feed it some power and then plug it into the coil...

What about the oil pressure gauge?? I'm assuming you are running a type 1 engine. What additional parts (besides the gauge from speedhut) would I need to make this work?

On the GPS speedos do they have any problems with dead areas or long searching for satellites after long periods of sitting?

The powered antenna on the Speedhut must be fairly powerful. It can drop out on me for a second going under a large underpass but I've had it work okay in a few parking garages. Of course you will lose the signal if a mountain of rock is sitting over a tunnel you are going through. It has a "hot" connection you can enable that makes it acquire much faster on start-up. It is a minimal drain on the battery which isn't a problem for me as my car is set up with a type of battery float/maintainer charger when it sets in my garage.

Recognized the "walls", I remember when they were being put up. You are the first person I know who owns a buggy down here. I just started getting into these "little buggers" Still looking for one. You would think you would see more of them down here in South Fl. Have a good one enjoy.

I seen yours and a couple other T Bug Pickups will poking through the forums. Love the body style, looks great in a bunch of different set ups.

Your buggy is very cool, looks good.

I have the engine all together and working again... just want to have some more upgrades done when I find a good shop.

The buggy has some jam, 2100cc engine feeds her plenty of go go juice.

Well... after combing through TheSamba for inspiration I have finalized my plan.

Loved the setup on wythac's buggy, so kind of copied the layout, liked the plate Kurt B used, and liked the guage colors MacLeod Willy used.

Sooooo... placed the order last night with Speedhut and picked up a 4 1/2" GPS speedo, and 2 1/16" oil pressure, oil temp, voltage, and tach gauges.

Just finished planning it out in autocad incorporating my idiot lights, switches and such to go from my current setup to this... now I just need to find a CNC shop.

Of note I'm having a new housing machined for the fuel gauge that will look exactly like the horn button to keep everything balanced.

Dude! That looks awesome. Yours is a much improved layout for the switches.

I put the gauges I needed to look at least often closest to the driver. They are a little harder to see (steering wheel and my ham fist on it). Oil pressure and temp on the passenger side.

Here is the one I put in my 73 Thing. I had them add the red tick marks like the original speedo.

Thanks wythac... can't wait to see the finished product. There is a perfect sightline in the steering wheel for the tach. I think I am going to weld a plate to a side tube to get the winch controls out of the sightline. As well weld a plate to the shifter box to mount the ignition in a funky spot out of the way.

frogman_94, do those marks represent proper cruising speeds in each gear??
