Tim - Go for it. Would've been nice to have company, but I managed to enjoy it by keeping eye on the prize each step of the way. Keep your sun bug...until I can buy it!! Wink

V-Wagen - Glad you liked the Hooters pic! Just for you, I'll make Hooter's photo-ops whenever I can! Laughing

Been there. I sold a 64 original sundial camper along with all my extra parts back in 1986 after I bought a brand new Nissan truck. After a two year hiatus I got back in and have owned about 40 plus VWs since then. I suspect if he does sell he'll get the itch after a time. Maybe he wants a different VW something older, a different model? Who knows. Serious VW boys usually own in multiples I've owned up to 10 at a time, we are currently down to five. Maybe I'm a hoarder. The VW disease does not go away it gets worse, ask around. Very Happy

Well, I probably wouldn't have any problem going through a bunch of other VWs but as I hinted at in my post this particular one is part of the family, bought brand new, and will never be sold, it would be like losing a sibling. I thought Tim felt the same way about his.

In fact when we had the engine fire in it back in summer of 1990 (about a month before I was going to take it with me my first year in college, AARGGHH)-- and we had had other problems with it before, with no one in the family knowing anything about how to work on one-- we seriously debated whether or not to get rid of it. But everyone basically knew my dad and I loved driving around in it, and the decision was made to get it fixed. The only way you can know what that feels like is if you owned it since new, for decades, and know every single piece of its history.

Anyway, no thread hijack intended--so back to the sightseeing Very Happy

The only reason I have considered selling my Sun Bug is that I'd like to get another Karmann Ghia. My first car was a 1969 Ghia that I bought in ... drum roll ... 1969.

The Samba Classifieds have not provided many bites, so when I get serious about selling the bug, I'll have to use Craigs List, I guess. I'm in no hurry to sell, anyway--and may decide to just keep it.

Any emotional bond I have would be for a copy of the Ghia I once owned--or possibly the 1970 single-cab I sold to pay taxes in 1994.

Actually, I think I'll pull the Samba ad now. Too many people try to talk you down--and do so even before they've seen the car up close. Geeze, if they want cheap, they might just buy a beater and hope they don't break down in the middle of dogpatch Wink .

Took care of some mid-trip maintenance this a.m. Washed the car and go rid of what seemed like 100s of squashed bugs from the windshield and body. Now I understand why some like to use that ugly-ass "bra."

Adjusted and bled the brakes, the maintenance task I absolutely hate more than any other. And replaced the one item that's busted on the trip so far:

Hehe, yeah well I could stop it no problem. Just needed an extra pump of the pedal to grab front and back....no more. Figures Miami driving isn't the best place in the work to take that chance...

V, I wonder why your pedal started getting soft? After installing a new master cylinder, front disc conversion, rear brakes, rubber lines, etc., I have not seen any difference in my pedal.

After you get back home, and if you're not using any brake fluid, or have any leaks, you might think about checking out all your slave cylinders, or replacing your mc.

By the way, I took a major two-mile road trip today to buy some groceries and a Mother's Day car. It was rather uneventful Rolling Eyes .

Your friend has a nice yard. I see all that green and have to wonder at the humidity there. It gets hot here in Redding, but no humidity to speak of.

And after looking over some of the pictures of your car, well, shoot, it looks as nice as mine, anyday.

Tim, Miami is tropical, Caribbean. Hot and humid is the order of the day. The paint is completely shot, looks good at 20-25 feet. Rattle can from the windshield forward. I used the correct code L51B from paint scratch, but it did not go on well, and the rest of the car is a badly-matched repaint over the original Enzian Blue by a PO.

But it does photograph well!

Did a bit of pre-return trip maintenance. Left rear tire was leaking, found a nail in it, patched it and it's ready to go.

Also participated in a mini-ACVW gathering in Miami - two of us basically - to compare Bugs and share some tuning experience.

That's my Super next to Frank's '70 sedan. For you old timers wondering about the hobby, Frank's the kind of person that you look forward to meeting. Kid in his early 20s, knows the Bug mechanics like he was born into it. Helped me tune my carb and identify a possible problem w/the mechanical advance of the distributor. Also, recognized that the vacuum can is from a Bus distributor, so that it probably provides less vacuum advance than the correct can for a Bug. So - the search for a replacement can begins!!

You shouldn't plug steel belted radials, the tire should be taken off the rim and "booted"(patched on the inside)...why no plug? two reasons, one is you do belt damage reaming the nail hole, and the second is the steel belt tends to cut the plug.. spend a few bucks and get it patched correctly..

So if it's already done would it harm the tire to keep driving on it? Or would you recommend driving on it flat before plugging it? I guess what I'm trying to ask, is which would damage the tire more?

I've always carried the plug kits, but I've never had to use one, so now I'm curious.

I bought some radial tires for my PT Cruiser--from the dealer who had an excellent price--and, not long after, I picked up a nail and I got a flat tire. I took it back to the dealer and they fixed it and I was on my way. Two years and 15,000 miles later, I noticed a plug in the tire. I then called and asked them why they used a plug instead of a patch from the inside, and they told me they no longer plugged tires, but used the patch.

Apparently, their "free flat repair" was genuine--but only if they hacked it, using a plug.

I definitely prefer the dismounting of the tire and having it patched from the interior, but I have to admit that plug they put in seems to be holding up after all the miles I put on it. I suppose I was lucky.

Didn't know that...Well, there's a firestone shop near here, I suppose I could stop by early before I head out and see if they'll patch it. It's held up fine today.
