Nice trailer Heinrich. They were actually made in the early 1980s. The Tip Tow magazine ad you linked was published in November 1980. _________________ fig

The Tip Tow trailers were made in South Africa under licence from Westfalia in the early 1980s. They have the same basic design as an Essen, with the only difference being that the box is made of aluminium.
My two Tip Tow trailers. I use the white one while the unpainted one is for show:

hey guys, does anyone know anywhere i can get some measurements and more detailed pictures of a westfalia trailer? i want to see if i can try to make one but with a few modifications. Im not willing to pay thousands of dollars for one. i just think its ridiculous how much they go for. i think i found a website that sells reproduction parts for the trailer.

To answer your question - there are numerous pics on the internet of the trailers. Look for Westfalia Essen Trailer. There are parts available for the trailers but no aftermarket reproduction. These were called "suitcase" trailers. As they were meant for the run off extra stuff one accumulates for a trip. They were cheap and functional and made in mass. Now some 40 years old, most are beat, dead and gone. The wood and rivet design was lightweight and durable if kept. Beat on it and leave it in the weather then they die.
As far as I know no one is making these on the cheap. They cost thousands now because they are a real deal accessory and never sold in the states. You can find them in the hundreds of dollars in Europe. Here in the States - yes a couple grand. The more goodies on it like the covered top, lid with rack, spare tire, kick stand the higher the price.
Several people have made "clones" from Harbor Freight type platforms. Search that as well.
Here is a recent purchase for one of my Essens - the top cover and frame.

When I bought my 64 notchback, I had fully intended on towing an Essen with it. I had seen a Westfalia tow hitch for a T3 briefly before I bought the notch and though there is no way Id ever see a T3 hitch again.
So when I got the notch I bought a VWoA T3 hitch and was going to use an 1 7/8th ball. No problemo with that combo.
So then Im on Face Book and Mikael Forsberg post one up - complete with inner fender strentheners, and bumper supports. Peiecs often missing. It was also restored, clean black and ready to mount. After verifying it was for a 311 & 361 - on its west badge, I bought it. The kicker is its a 1964 hitch as well I thought the odds were long on finding a Westfalia hitch for my bus from 1977 - same as the bus. Now Im double lucky
This will be a nice addition to a car that getting hit hard with the accessory stick.

Im finally getting around to the Essen I bought back in 2014.
Took the old tire off yesterday and hope to get a new tire, tube and bearings in today.
Bearings look pretty easy _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

What a PITA! I've wrecked three tubes trying to replace them by hand! standard 4.80/4.00 tubes in new 4.80 tires.
I think ill take them someplace instead.
The bearings were easy though. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

I watched the guys at the tire shop for an hour get the tires seated! They finally did it without tubes (my tires are tubless)
On to the wood portion ... _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.
