I have an 81 vw vanagon that i recently took out on its first road trip. Everything was running fine but just a few days ago the turn signals started acting up. When i turn on the indicator the green light on the dash will come on occasionally, but will only blink 2 to 3 times before it stops all together and the blinkers stop along with it. All of the indicator lights are in good condition and all of the fuses look good. Any ideas what may be causing the issue?

What about the emergency flashers? When you turn on the switch do they flash?

grounds, corrosion (tracking) in the bulb holder.. grounds
water in one lens
grounds on any 1 corner will give them the funk.

once I had a van with a single element bulb stuffed into the dual filament holder.. center pin contacted both wiring circuits and caused some odd behaviors.

^^^. This. Have you taken off the signal bulb holders and checked their condition?

When i flip on the hazards they will blink a few times and then stop just the same. I have not inspected the bulbs themselves, just checked to make sure they all work. Ill pull the covers off tonight once weve stopped and see what i can see.

Bulb bases not grounding, contacts on bulbs corroded, contacts in bulb holder's corroded, bad flasher.

This will keep you busy for awhile.
