Edit Number 2. Reposted picture again. See sjbartnik's post below for explanation.

The whole knob assembly is held into place with a nut on the back side. Get a wrench on the nut, unscrew it, then you gotta turn the knob to retract the latch pin so that you can get the nut off the knob assembly, then just pull the knob assembly through the hole. |
(Note: Except substitute the words "latch plastic prong" for "Latch Pin".. I used the wrong name)
* Originally I was mad at Cusser's reply, but am over it

See above.
My recommendation: since you have had some trouble doing this straightforward task, stay away from mechanical repairs. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I didn't ask how to turn the key. I have a nice bug I had shipped to me from Southern Cali and my Bentley is in the mail. I'd rather ask than break. Are you all having a bad day? |

Don't take it personal. We're just giving you a hard time. _________________ 1968 Volkswagen Bug w/ 1600 Dual Port

Thank you kindly. The stock assembly is stamped from the factory and I don't want to replace it. |

That Hella looks pretty good. Looks like they have replaceable latch knob covers too. Better than the one from Jbugs. The Jbugs latch knob is one piece solid. The stock knob is rubber and its' round black cover plate somehow broke. So I bought a round 1" diameter enameled lapel pin with the VW logo and it fits nicely into the flexible rubber stock knob. It dresses up the all black glove box door and latch while retaining the stock parts.
A body shop guy in town here does some awesome hydro dip prints of just about any image you want. I'm thinking wood grain on the glove box door, down the road a bit. |
