|
|
So here is Marilyn, my, new to me 1978 Double Cab. This is my first bus/double cab. Always wanted a double cab and would have preferred a splitty but those are a little out of my price range for a one that doesn’t need a complete restoration. I thought this one was cool… the PO claims it was used as an EMT vehicle in Switzerland (true or not, I don’t know). It has Bosch sirens and rotary blue light which is pretty cool. It came with a maintenance log written in Swiss and is pretty complete and came with an old stretcher too.
It looks pretty good from 10 feet but up close you can see that the PO slapped on a quickie paint job that is starting to bubble in some places where obvious bondo is. They also painted over every exposed rubber piece (which could have easily been removed or masked) besides the window rubber that shows some over spray on the edges. Interior is also immaculate besides some surface rust on the floors under the mats. Under carriage is in decent shape with typical surface rust in areas where the rubberized undercoating has come off. It must have been in a very dirty/dusty area because underneath is layered in dust/dirt stuck to the undercoating and in every crevasse. I took an air gun to every nook and cranny and must have blown out 10 lbs of dirt from inside the panels, etc. The engine and tranny are covered in grease and grime. The CV boots were tore and slung grease everywhere. For the most part it runs great but lacks any power. It has a 1700 cc (I think, at least that’s what the PO said).
I wanted to do a “here is my bus/project/refurb thread” because I enjoy reading everyone else’s and the input/advice/encouragement from the community is great. My plan is to go from section to section and do a rolling restoration, mostly on the undercarriage and repair/replace parts as needed. I don’t want to tear it down for a year and not be able to drive it from time to time. It’s been too long in-between VW ownership for me and I miss it. I've been knee deep in the threads on the forum and am amazed by the knowledge here. Already got my list and I'm ready to hit it! I’ll post pics as I go along and any of your expert advice or tips is well appreciated!! Thanks for checking her out.
- Tony

Thanks everybody! I'm pretty pumped about her! Here are a couple pics from the undercarriage. As you can see these parts didn't make the "very nice restoration" - PO... list. But I'm an OCD perfectionist (as far as my skills will take me) so it really bothers me underneath, ready to tackle that and make it pretty again!
And some engine porn for aeromech... it's some dirty porn even after I cleaned it up a lot!
Got my birth certificate ordered... couple months
Also here is the VIN and the M-code plate
Question... how do I know if it's a 1700cc as the previous owner states or 1600cc or something else.

Just looked at my M-Code info again. The destination was Birrfeld Switzerland.
And you are right, as always BD. "If" it's the original engine the M-Code says: Type 1 (AS) - 1584cc, 37 kW (50 bhp DIN) _________________ 1978 Bay Window Double Cab (1600cc) - Marilyn

Hitting the mechanics first... Tackled the CV joint boots. Both were tore and in bad need of replacement. Painted the shafts up, cleaned and greased them up and reinstalled with new bolts and boots. The passenger side was original CV joints but the driver side was replaced at some point in the past.
Once I got it all back together I noticed some play, about a 1/8"-1/4", in the transmission at the CV joint on the drivers side. It's definitely in the tranny and not the CV joint itself. If I grab the CV joint and manipulate it (see red arrows in pic), it moves back and forth from within the tranny.
Any ideas on what causes this. I'm just smart enough to know that something is wrong and wore out, but don't know what it is in the tranny that is causing this play. I looked in the Bentley but could see any thing that pops out to me as a cause.
Red arrows to show movement but in all directions _________________ 1978 Bay Window Double Cab (1600cc) - Marilyn

Very pretty
A little play in the output flanges isn't uncommon, if it's not so bad it's trashing the seal don't lose sleep over it, 99% of the used buses here have it.
You can try to source some new flanges but the differential shafts may be worn too, Loctite makes some pretty amazing chemical fixes for worn splines, you may want to do a little exploring with thier product line as well. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
