Have an 83.5 with all the right parts and no heat. One stray
Wire hanging from rear of safety switch, grey and blue, no idea where we go. Bentley doesn't even show this one. Pump will fire with direct 12v but not igniting. Also, only one fuel pump set up for the heater. Any ideas here? I'm going nuts....! |

Well, now I know how to take it apart and clean the points but it still hasn't fixed the issue. Now I need a new flange clamp and possibly a new shell for the combustion fan because a two inch chunk fell off. Not to mention drilling a new ground. East coast vehicle moved to the west coast beaches..... Serious rust oration project. Hate breaking things that weren't broken to begin with |

Now, if the safety switch is tripped, will it kill everything or just spark or fuel...? |

It should kill both if it's tripped.
Make sure your fuel pump is working on the BA6, then check for spark.
If you can confirm that, then maybe check the injector/sprayer to see if it's clogged. _________________ 1982 Westy-Air Cooled, Fuel Injected, 4 Speed Manual

Sooooo.....no spark. Tried switching out the coil with one from an old scooter and nothing. However, when I bench tested the glow plug I obtained a beautiful white and blue spark. So the plug is good, and I'm fairly positive on the replacement coil. Gotta check the guts inside the combustion blower now as it appears that the points are making good contact. Little boxes are both cracked on both sides of the combustion blower yet I am getting signal to the fuel pump. Anyone know how to test the signal to the coil? |

I used a probe and separate battery to test everything while off the van.
Started with the blower, made sure I had contact with the spark points, then with the fuel points (both on the blower.) The easy part is the spark points on it are under the metal cap, not deep inside. If the blower runs, then you "should" have power to spark and fuel! The coil shouldn't be a problem, unless its physically damaged. That you could test with a voltmeter. _________________ 1982 Westy-Air Cooled, Fuel Injected, 4 Speed Manual

From experience its always the combustion blower or safety switch. If the capacitors are cooked for the combustion blower points replace them, I went to an electronics supply store and they had some. Easy to change. Then clean up the points and adjust.
The safety switch can fail internally after some time, the fine wire wound on the spool(I think it is a heating coil that acts on a bimetalic strip to provide a timed delay) breaks off with age, just re-solder it.
If you blower impeller or housing is damaged I wouldn't run it anyway, it would likely just torch through the side of the heater and then you are done for good. Contact some used parts suppliers here in Canada as almost all the vans up to 1985 had the heaters installed. |

Safety works ok. Ran it long enough for it to shut everything down on me yesterday. Then reset and all was working( well, everything but spark). Impeller looks look but the capacitors are both cracked and one wire is a little browned on the bottom. Gonna hunt down the capacitors and replace at least that side and see what happens. At this rate I'm gonna be an Eberspacher guru in a month. |

Hey dirtyhippy,
I just found your troubles here on the samba. I work behind the Freddie's in Newberg and would be happy to help out. I've got plenty of tools and electrical know how. Hit me up with a pm if you would like another hand.
Cheers

That's usually how it works!
BTW here's the stock capacitor (got the number of my photo in a previous post)
