|
|
A friend of mine bought a 73 Westy that's been sitting since '83.
No engine.
New engine is built and the installer says she needs some goofy tins. It's holding up the progress.
His quote was "you need the rectangle tins that go from the heater box to the fan shroud" "They have holes on both sides"
Any idea what the heck?
Some pics would be awesome, so I know what to be looking for.
Even better, anyone got a pair for sale??
Thanks to everyone as always. |

Maybe this? I have this in my pile of parts. Not too experienced with the tin yet. (at all). Not even sure it for a bus, could be a bug part |

The mechanic is referring to the covers that attach at the blower air ducts, down low @ 5 & 7 o'clock, they clamp "over the top" of the sheetmetal one-way shutters that duct air through the heat exchangers to the cabin.
Two fasteners per "clamp", same as the screws that hold all the
cooling tin together.
Today's ads have a decent image of where they attach, check
Bus Heater Boxes 75-78 in the BayWindow Parts ads, currently pg.4,
the lower left of image is where the piece attaches on the box. |

That is part of your intake air preheat stove setup.
You want the two little covers that Tim mentions. Not a big deal to run without them, but your heat will barely work and they will not be easy to add later. I think they are available new these days. Check with Bus Depot.
They originally had gaskets to seal them to the heater boxes and fan shroud, but I prefer to use RTV silicone for the job as it gives a tighter seal. Purest will surely disagree.

I just bought everything in this picture. The flappers came from Europe and I got one of the covers actually from a VW dealership online. The other I had in stock. Let me know if you need links to the source.

I still can't believe that we don't have a better illustrated parts breakdown than that old fiche. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum
