I noticed recently that my car has the upper portion for the rifle mounts, is this standard for US specification Things? |

The trick is trying to find the parts!! I've been looking for the rifle mounts for my Thing for a few years, and they are tough to locate. I found a lower mount a couple of years ago, but I haven't been able to find the upper. You'll see them listed in the classifieds on occasion, but they get snatched up quickly. |

Just some additional information. I have seen photos that suggest that four sets of mounts can be installed. The two by the back seats, pictured above, and one on either side of the front seats, mounted to the inside of the rocker. |

The lower mount that I have was from K-mann a few years ago, but he has been out of the upper mounts for a LONG time (since before I got the lower from him). I'm on his "waiting list" for an upper mount if/when he gets any uppers in stock. |

Try searching for them by Nato stock number if you can find the numbers they were most likely used in mutiple vehicles. A Nato stock number will be like this XXXX-XX-XXX-XXXX _________________ 74 Thing stock lots of rust figured someone needed to save it. |

I have the top mount installed and the bottom on a shelf in the garage. I wanted to get a replica FN rifle as used by NATO but my wife vetoed the idea, so I just have the top mount in place, and am still looking for a good replica. BTW what is the NATA FN rifle that was installed in a military 181? _________________ 63 singlecab

Difficult question. Almost all military 181 were in service in the German army. And they didn't use a Belgian FN at that time. They used the Heckler & Koch G3 Assault rifle in the '70.
If you want a FN rifle in your 181, I would go for the FN FAL. Period correct, in Nato service and used worldwide. _________________ Thing stuff:

It was standard if your car was a military car, if your car was a civilian car, as all the "Things" imported to the US in 73 and 74 were, (The US military never used 181's in the continental US, Some Kubelwagens were captured in Europe during WWII but those were not "Things") It was not a "Factory Installed" option, more than likely someone added them later on, as they've always been available as an accesory. Either way, its cool to have them. _________________ 1972 VW 181 SAFARI 1500 cc GRB Trans-axle |

I read somewhere that the pre G3 rifles used in Type181's were the Spanish CETME in 7.62 x 51 that the Bundeswehr were evaluating.
So for fun and my rifle mounts, I ordered the appropriate demilled surplus kit.
I purchased a new receiver, new barrel, and all the little bits to be legal!
My for "fun project" is now close to $1000 box of parts that I cannot find anyone to put together!
Don't tell my wife!
In my opinion I would attach the lower bracket to the floor pan and not the interior rocker panel.
The rocker panel sheet metal is not too strong and prone to rust. |
