Howdy folks.

I spent some time searching TheSamba and the internet, didn't really come up with much of anything. I realize there is a 5.25" speaker that fits directly to the dash. What fits these old brackets. Here is mine with a standard 6.5" speaker on it. As you can (sort of) see, the mounting holes are outside of the speaker:

What speaker fits this bracket? I'm going with the original Sapphire I radio and single speaker in my '62 bug and I prefer to have the bigger speaker if I can figure it out, and since I bought the bracket already. I was hoping a regular 6.5" speaker worked, because I have three of them that I don't need for anything else, but it doesn't look like they do…

Thanks, Doug

Thanks guys Cool

The Wolfsburg West is really cheaper than I was hoping to get and the RetroSound one seems really expensive to me. Based on that RetroSound model, it appears that a 6-3/4" speaker is needed to work with the bracket. Those are actually fairly common, so I'll probably look for a pair of something decent but not too expensive and just use one of them.

You could try a VW of Mexico one, these photos were posted by Parts VW (Antonio Trejo). I don't know if they are still available.

...another reason I'm gonna miss Radio Shack.

Are they keeping the online products, or is that folding up, too?

Changed my mind, I don't always have to make things difficult. I am just going to get the WW speaker Idea It is for the bracket, correct, not to bolt directly to the dash?

Thanks again, Doug

If you have the original speaker you can have it rebuilt. Take it too a music store that rebuilds band amps

My original speaker was almost certainly toast in the mid-late 80s when we got the car. I emailed Wolfsburg West, their speaker does attach using the bracket. It will not attach directly to the dash. If you want to bolt the speaker straight to the dash, you need to find a 5 1/4" inch speaker Idea

Hey GP, thanks for asking but I got one from the classifieds last year. I didn't realize it wasn't necessary and maybe made it a bit harder to find a speaker. The WW should be fine, I will be running a 12V converted Sapphire I (original to the car, surprised it is still around).

Just to close this loop, I ordered one of the Wolfsburg West speakers after they told me it works with the bracket. Turns out it does not, it is the size that will bolt directly to the dash. To their credit, they let me keep the speaker for free…

To use the bracket, you need a 6" pin cushion speaker. Here is a link to a great quality 8 OHM speaker. It fits perfectly, and sound terrific.

OK, I'll bite. How do you know it sounds terrific? Wouldn't you need a radio to test that?

Here is the photo with my Sapphire VI installed. It uses a newer design small magnet to allow more sound output given the low wattage output of these old stereo units.

Turnswitch is a first-class company. I have used their speakers in both VWs and vintage Chevrolets. That said, don't expect audiophile sound from an AM radio, through a single, 6 inch speaker mounted in a metal dash.

Turnswitch also offers expert radio service, restoration and AM-FM conversion of original Sapphire radios.
