If this is your bus it has 14" stock wheels on it right now:
Clean them up (powdercoat?) and get whatever everyone is recommending in the last few pages of the tire thread in the FAQ's, Hankook RA08 seems to ring a bell but check first as availability and quality changes. |
Seriously, you can tell from the picture? How so? (Actually curious and not being sarcastic).
Also, I'll try and see if they're safe because I think more than 2 of the wheels (we have 5) have been hit (came from a different bus) and they might not be straight. On 1 of them you can see a bad dent, which I will have to replace entirely. _________________ 1972 Westfalia P30 hardtop Campmobile [On-going Restoration]

It's not hard, they look like stock wheels and there's not many other wheels with a 5X112 bolt pattern, stock wheels only came in 14"

I'm glad they're the stock ones, now to just figure out and see if they'll work or if should buy other ones. I know for a fact 1 is going to be replaced. _________________ 1972 Westfalia P30 hardtop Campmobile [On-going Restoration]

Nice!
It looks like I'm going to have to buy a new set of wheels. What do you guys think?

I took my wheels that looked like that to my Les Schwab and had them blasted and powder coated. Any decent tire shop should be able to tell if the wheels are true
Dump those tires though and get some LT tires.. _________________ '65 Beetle "Lil' Lulu"- Ruby Red

I don't see anything wrong with the wheels you have aside from the need for a sandblast and paint or powdercoat, if you are concerned there's many prettier ones in that classifieds link I posted earlier.
Tcash, can you get 8 ply or LT tires that fit those and don't funk up the gear ratios? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I really want to stick to the 14s because they're small and I think look best on buses.
I'll get them sand blasted and see what's up.
I'm excited, I was able to find a set of both door handles, sliding door handle, ignition, rear hatch and engine door set with all of them working on 1 key! _________________ 1972 Westfalia P30 hardtop Campmobile [On-going Restoration]

Your engine looks to be a 2.0L in case you don't know. You need to decide on things like running hydraulic or solid lifters and what kind of cam you want, stock or somewhat upgraded. Putting money into the heads are where you really get dividends. |

my suggestion would be to set a budget for the engine first. It is easy to get $4000 - $5000 into a type 4 engine. Once you have a budget it will determine what quality rebuild or refresh you can do. The more you take it apart now to see what you have the greater the odds that you will have a basket case before you even get started. When you are ready to begin disassembly and rebuilding it will go smoother if you wait. Then you can clean and inspect everything at one time. If your budget is unlimited then by all means read up on it and get started. If you will be farming the work out, by all means do not take it apart. Many mechanics will not accept a basket case project. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Nice. I didn't know, the car is currently at my uncles shop, so he's the one putting work into the bus. He's going to continue taking the engine apart and cleaning it to see what else he can find. I will have a list of what he comes up with for the engine and I'll post it here for your guys opinions. I don't think he's going to recommend what type of part I should get which is where I will need your guys experience to help me choose out what type of heads, cams, etc I should go towards. After I get the list, I will also post my budget. At the moment, I'm looking at somewhere close to $4k-$5k as SGKent posted. My budget may go higher, but as of right now, I am allowing "$4k-$5k" so if option go over to $7k, feel free to recommend. _________________ 1972 Westfalia P30 hardtop Campmobile [On-going Restoration]

Sounds reasonable, make sure Uncle follows the books for dismantling and doesn't throw anything out.
You may also not like the way that 2.0 gets along with the transmission ratios, if there's any budget left over the transmission might need some. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Personally I would balance the engine within a gnat's ass and stick with the lower gear ratios, unless going fast it where it is at for OP. He might also want to run a high viscosity index synthetic oil like a 5w40 or 5w50 to keep the oil temps down at the high revs. Depending on where one drives, being able to pull a 6% grade at 65 MPH may count for more than being able to cruise the flats at 75 mph. |

The lower ratio isn't the problem so much as the stock 2.0 has a somewhat narrow powerband and runs out of torque at some very inconvenient shift points. Of course if you are getting serious about the cam, heads, carbs and exhaust you can prevent all of that and build something that pulls almost up to the redline and possibly down lower as well, it doesn't have to be a race monster, but there's ways to improve certain aspects of it's power curve, anything's possible with enough $ or at least some careful thinking and research ahead,. Now's the time for that _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'm no mechanic, so I understand like 2 words from those replies. LOL
But I will see what uncle comes up with, and compare that to the information I have here. And of course many many questions _________________ 1972 Westfalia P30 hardtop Campmobile [On-going Restoration]
