I know running gaskets in the combustion chamber (like my heads) is common with boosted engines and closed decks. I have never done it to an engine, but apparently it creates a better seal than metal on metal.... I think I am going to swing by same day cylinder head in fullerton and see what they say. If there are any performance oriented VW shops, may you please let me know?

Thanks,

Al

I found a picture for reference. The design of vanagon engine is different and the groove is located in the head instead. So I guess I will need to talk to performance shop.

That is a lot different from running a rubber o-ring underneath the cylinder head sealing ring. The purpose of a groove in the head or block as shown is to increase pressure on the head gasket by filling the groove with a metal gasket that protrudes a bit, while a rubber 0-ring just about has to cause less pressure on the head sealing ring and not more.

You are correct. I apologize for not being clear in my original question. I was curious if anyone seen or know of cooper gasket or stainless wire gasket used. I would never put a rubber gasket there.
