+1 on the links Tcash.. Always helpful.
I'm really on the fence regarding the steering box. For the same price, I have two options:
-Get a rebuilt early box from bus boys/wolfgang
-Or pickup a new late model box and drop arm and convert mine to the late style box
I'm having trouble with the pros and cons on each. I've heard a lot of hit or miss stories on the steering box rebuilds. I don't want to drop $300+ for an old box with new paint, but I also don't want to go through the trouble to adapt to the new style box if the new ones quality is not there either. I haven't found any great info on the difference between the early or late style boxes. Is one inherently better than the other?

VDN, did you choose shocks yet? My gas-a-justs performed very well on my off road trip.  |
No shock choice yet.. Still running on the shocks that were on it. Need to tackle some of the more important things first.

Ya good cores are drying up. JK was getting repopped RHD box's. But I don't see them anymore. I was hoping the worm and peg out of those would work in the LHD.

So I finally got a chance to crawl under the Bus and pull off the belly pan to inspect the steering. As I suspected, the steering box itself is the issue. The drag link looks to have been replaced whenever the PO did the tie rods. The issue I'm seeing is a clear radial movement of the steering box output shaft before it tries to rotate with steering input. This movement is also the source of the popping noise I hear with steering input. Looking into options for replacement. I suspect this one will need machining to correct that is beyond a DIY rebuild. Any thoughts here?
Otherwise we've been enjoying the Bus making short little runs around the local area. Still planning a longer get away (also waiting for a break in the heat  )

I run the gas-a-just and think they are great. They feel great on a off road and handle a loaded bus well. They might be a good match for your westy since westy are heavier then a regular bus. I got my steering box from Bus Boys. It's nice and tight and the price was good.

I always had really good luck with real basic oil filled shocks on my beetle. The gas shocks made it too stiff. For that reason I was leaning away from the gas-a-just ones for the bus. |

I'll look them up and send them over... I'm not in a big hurry though. Sorta tapped out funding wise getting to this point. So I've got to let the dust settle a bit before I resume buying more parts LOL |

Thanks... I've busted my tail getting to this point (not implying you haven't).
I'm fortunate this Bus was in such good condition to start out with, as it's helped me get it back into service pretty quickly. I've owned it just shy of three months now. Ready to start putting on some miles and enjoying it.

That's what I was hoping to try if the box needs attention.
I'm guessing the draglink might be pretty loose though. Won't know until I get under there. I'll keep yall posted.

Just source the seals and take a Saturday to do it. There's plenty of pictures in the manual on how to do it.

Wolfgang Int.
There are some differences between LHD & RHD.
Someone was re-popping them. JK used to stock them.
